Lots of sirens

Have seen and heard numerous fire trucks and aid cars going east bound on Madison in the past 20 minutes. Does anyone know what’s happening?

Light Rail to & from the CD

For anyone from the Central District who took a trip on light rail this weekend, it’s easy to feel a bit jealous of our neighbors to the south. They’ve got a shiny new, smooth, quick ride to and from downtown. Most of us will have to be content with our often crowded bus lines, at least until the new light rail station opens at I-90 & Rainier in 2020.

There is one destination where light rail should provide a quicker and more reliable ride than the bus – it’s a great connection to and from the airport, and we’ve got several bus lines that make it easy to build a trip.

The best place to connect with light rail from here is the Mt. Baker Station at Rainier & McClellan. You can get there from the 48, 8, or 14 bus lines. To find out which will be easiest for you, try this google map and change the first field to your own address. For example, from 23rd & Cherry, it only takes 11 minutes to get to light rail.

Once you get to the Mt. Baker station, your ride time to the airport will be about 30 minutes, including a shuttle bus between the Tukwila station and the actual airport. Total cost for bus and light rail fare will be about $4.

Wondering if it would ever be worth your time to take light rail downtown? We’ve run the numbers, and found that the answer is no for anyone who lives north of I-90. Here’s a map that shows how close you have to be to save time by taking light rail vs. the normal bus routes. If you live within the purple circle, you’ll almost always save time by walking to the Mt. Baker light rail station instead of taking the bus. If you don’t mind a longer walk, the yellow circle shows the area where you’ll often save time, given the unreliable schedules of the bus as it navigates through crowded streets. Otherwise, you’ll want to take your normal bus route to and from downtown.

07/06/09 Prostitution 21st & Cherry

I only just found this website so, we are only just reporting this incident. It occurred on July 6, ’09.
We live near 21st and Cherry. On the morning (7:00am, in BROAD Daylight) of July 6th, we woke to find a Prostitute and her “client” engaged in “the act” on the stairs leading down into our building’s laundry room. We were able to frighten them away by slamming the door and threatening to phone the police. We have many times found drug addicts smoking there and also have found a used condom on the ground.(YUK!) So, we’ve started to personally make certain our gates are locked every night now.(theres only so much we can do though, since we are not the only ones with keys/access to the gates) I have a feeling that because the laundry had only a couple times been unlocked, and the landlord has had to repair the windows many times, that people had been creeping in there at night to do all sorts of things in the past. The windows have been fixed & baricaded, and the gates are now kept locked so, I haven’t had any more trouble recently.

Police Outside on 24th and Yesler

Not sure if anyone has picked this one up yet. Several officers including detectives have a car stopped with a male and female passenger being questioned. Nothing is more fun than walking out on your front porch and realizing that the police have guns drawn and are surrounding a car!

Serious break-in last night?

Through the email grape-line, I just heard about what amounts to be a very serious break-in that occurred last night at the 1900 block of 31st. Ave. South. Does anyone know any more of the details of what happened? According to the email, three individuals used a ladder to enter a (occupied) home through a open 2nd story window at 1:30 am. One of the occupants was seriously beaten and ended up in the hospital with a fractured skull.

Horace Mann Building Worthy of Saving

Workers were busy boarding up windows this morning as I walked the dog around the block where the Horace Mann building sits empty.

On our daily walks I’ve noticed a significant increase in the amount of trash gathering around the block. Discarded beer cans, fast food remnants and packaging, condoms and hygiene products are common and I can’t walk ten feet in either direction without willing the dog to leave them alone.

I’ve already witnessed some of the effects, but the following article illustrates the possible repercussions of this stately building being shuttered for too long.

Can we save the old Horace Mann School?
