Man found outside 22nd/Madison Safeway died of ‘natural causes’

Before Christmas, Central District News reported on an incident involving an apparently homeless man found dead outside the E Madison Safeway on the morning of Thursday, December 19th.

Unusually cold Seattle weather and the circumstances of the man found dead in his wheelchair concerned many readers who had written or called us to find out more about the medic and police response that morning.

According to the King County Medical Examiner, Eric R. Leigh died on the 19th of heart disease. He was 56. Central District News doesn’t know much more about the man but we wanted to update the details given the concern the initial report generated.

Is this your cat?

We live on the 2200 block of E. Marion. For the past few months there’s been a black cat with a red collar coming into our yard and even our house and attacking our cats. He is very aggressive. Our young cat has been attacked several times and yesterday this cat ripped open our 10 year old cats ear. The situation has become very serious. If this is your cat, can you please keep him indoors. It’s just a matter of time before one of our cats is going to get seriously injured if some solution is not found.

Traffic Calming 101

Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a speed bump and a speed hump?  How about a chicane and a choker?

Traffic engineers from the Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) will answer these questions and more at an informational meeting on Tuesday, January 7, at 6:00 PM at the Garfield Community Center, 2323 E Cherry Street.

The informational meeting, titled Traffic Calming 101, will provide an introduction to the variety of tools SDOT can implement to calm traffic on neighborhood streets and arterials.  SDOT engineers will also describe the process for applying for traffic calming measures in our neighborhood.  If you know an unsafe spot that would benefit from traffic calming, this meeting is for you.

The meeting will also include a short presentation by Central District resident John Stewart of Feet First on how Feet First uses walking audits to help folks understand their neighborhood from a different perspective.

This meeting is brought to us by the 23rd Avenue ACT’s “Livable Streets for All” Action Team, a team of neighbors working in conjunction with city agencies to make our neighborhood streets safe for persons of all ages.   For more information about this meeting or the Livable Streets for All action team, please contact 23rd Avenue ACT members Brendan Patrick (soccerbrendan AT gmail.com) or Jocquelyn Duncan (ejocquelyn AT gmail.com) or call Kerry Wade of the Seattle Department of Neighborhoods (206.733.9091).

How many stages in Seattle can claim Billie Holliday, Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Jimi Hendrix, Fugazi, Spalding Gray, Elvis Costello, and Bill T. Jones as performers who have graced their stages? Just one: Washington Hall.

To kick off the final phase of the campaign to restore Washington Hall to its historic glory and future home for Seattle’s diverse arts and cultural groups we’re holding a free open house style event. Everyone, and especially those with a past connection to the Hall, are welcome to drop by to check out some free food and special performances by some surprise guests. If you have a memory about the Hall, please bring it to share. We’re collecting photos, posters, and any souvenirs of Washington Hall history. More details will be coming, and many special guests and performers will be announced.

All ages are welcome from 5pm-9pm.  It’s 21 and over after 9pm. More information will be announced via Facebook.com/Washington Hall.

Drivers, Remember All Intersections are Crosswalks. At non lighted intersections pedestrians have the right of way.

Recently, I have encountered a number of polite and law abiding drivers.  However, as a pedestrian, it seems that fewer and fewer drivers are in this category and yield the right of way to pedestrians, especially along E. Union and E. Cherry.   E. Cherry has long been the worst.  Remember, pedestrians are not suppose to risk their lives to stop autos.  Drivers are suppose to make it comfortable for a waiting pedestrian to cross.
