Wednesday: Gay marriage celebration at Central Cinema + The Art Show at Hollow Earth

Queer film organization Three Dollar Bill Cinema is celebrating the passage of marriage equality in the state with a double feature Wednesday evening at Central Cinema. And you’re invited!

From Three Dollar Bill Cinema:

You’re invited to Three Dollar Bill Cinema’s Gay Wedding Celebration, with I THINK I DO and THE WEDDING BANQUET at Central Cinema

Celebrate the passage of marriage equality in Washington (and help to keep it legal!) with two fun-filled, matrimony-minded classics of queer cinema.
Three Dollar Bill Cinema’s Gay Wedding Celebration is the first event to be produced under our new label of archival events, Rewind. Hard-to-find movies, rarely screened film prints, and classics from the archives will be showcased in future Rewind screenings of vintage queer films. From the festive holiday tradition of “An Evening With AUNTIE MAME” to month-long retrospective series such as “OUTLAW: Jean Genet on Film,” these events provide opportunities for generations young and mature to look back at queer themes and imagery in film and see how far we’ve come.

23rd and Union liquor store ‘rights’ sell for $295k

The ability to sell liquor near 23rd and Union sold at auction for $295,100 late last week. Beaverton, Oregon’s Michale Beraki purchased the rights for what could be the only CD liquor store south of Madison and north of Jackson.

Beraki still needs to negotiate a lease with building owner Tom Bangasser, who told CDNews he is interested in keeping a liquor store in the building. Beraki also won the rights to Store 74 in Lynnwood.

Washington State Liquor Store 182 has been hawking booze since 1993. The store sold $3,541,604 worth of booze in 2011. But as the state prepares to get out of the booze-selling business, it is selling one-time exceptions to a rule included in I-1183 that puts liquor sales almost entirely in the hands of large retailers. The Costco-funded and citizen-approved initiative requires that businesses applying to sell liquor be a minimum of 10,000 square feet. Store 182 is 4,347 square feet.

Grocery Outlet at MLK and Union is large enough to apply for a liquor license, but a manager told CDNews they are not pursuing a license at this time.

By winning the auction, Beraki can either open a store at the current location, open a store in a nearby location or sell the rights to open a liquor store to another party.

Inspired by park’s namesake, resident organizes Flo Ware Park Day

Sully McGinnis, proprietor of the Kitchen Sink Project, never thought much about the mysterious namesake of the park down the street. But after reading a little about the life of Flo Ware, McGinnis was inspired and decided to organize a day to celebrate Ware’s life and the 30th Anniversary of the 28th and Jackson park.

From McGinnis:

What I found blew me away, a passionate story about a dynamic lady who simply tried to live her life as a good neighbor. This struck me very deeply because her visions and way of thinking about life are much the same as my own. Many of Flo Ware’s visions are those that I try to mirror through the Kitchen Sink Project. I wanted to invite you to this exciting event.

Celebration details:

May 8th is the 30th Anniversary of Flo Ware Park

12:00-3:00

Man caught after trying to pimp same undercover officer second time

This guy has a memory problem. Jeremy Marclay Flemings and Anthony Kenner have been charged with attempting to promote prostitution after they allegedly offered an undercover SPD officer protection and to pay for her hotel room in return for half her earnings, according to charging documents.

This was not, however, the first time undercover Officer Clark and Flemings had met, according to the documents. Flemings, now 19, had done time as a juvenile after he was caught in a pimping sting two years ago. The undercover officer in that sting? Officer Clark.

The sting went down at Rainier and Charles April 12. It ended when officers swooped in at undercover Officer Clark’s signal. Details, from the charging documents:

SPD: Man carjacked at 26th and Columbia shortly after buying the car in Craigslist deal

We’ve written about a lot of Craigslist deals gone awry in the CD, but they usually involve items like iPads and iPhones. Wednesday, a man was robbed at gunpoint near 17th 26th and Columbia just seconds after paying $1,400 in cash for a 1991 Ford Explorer.

From the SPD Blotter:

Mere moments after handing over cash for a used car Wednesday evening, a man found himself at the mercy of two carjackers in the Central District.

The man told police that Wednesday afternoon, he contacted a woman about an online ad for a 1991 white Ford Explorer, and later met her in the parking lot of a restaurant near the Seattle Center.

The man drove with the woman to the Central District and parked near a home on 17th 26th Avenue and E. Columbia Street.

The woman told the victim she needed to go into the home and get paperwork for the car, and the victim handed her $1400 in cash to pay for the vehicle.

After the woman got out of the car and walked off, two men approached the victim—who was waiting in the car—and pointed a gun at him.

The suspects ordered the victim out of the car, demanded his keys and cell phone, and drove off with the victim’s car.

Person in line at 23rd and Cherry gas station burned in coffee assault crossfire

A customer in line at the 23rd and Cherry AM/PM convenience store got caught in the path of an angry coffee buyer shortly before 10:30 a.m. April 9, according to the police report. The angry woman wanted a 20 ounce cup at the 16 ounce price. When the clerk demanded the full price, the angry customer tried to throw the coffee at the clerk, but hit the person waiting in line behind her instead.

The assailant then jumped up on the counter and kicked over a container of pepperoni sticks before fleeing the scene. From the police report:

‘Touchy Feely’ crew filming at Grocery Outlet

A film crew is stationed outside Grocery Outlet at MLK and Union for the first day of shooting “Touchy Feely.”

The film, starring Rosemarie DeWitt, Scoot McNairy, Ellen Page and Josh Pais, is directed by Lynn Shelton and will be shooting around the CD and Capitol Hill. Shelton previously directed several indie flicks, including the Stranger-inspired “Humpday” and a particularly crazy episode of Mad Men (the one in Season 4 where Don almost gets caught by the Feds, Lane’s father slaps him for having a black girlfriend and Lucky Strike drops Sterling Cooper Draper Price).

Anyway, today the crew is filming a shopping scene inside Grocery Outlet (who Shelton said “were super super nice” about shooting) and some shots at the bus stop in front of the Green Plate Special garden across the street. Next week, they will also be filming at 20/20 Cycle.
