Man arrested at Garfield High after scuffle with officer

Several readers contacted us asking about a large police response this morning at Garfield High School.

According to police, a 26-year-old man was contacted by an officer stationed at the high school around 8:30 a.m. Monday morning, the first day of classes after the school’s winter break.

The man, who had a warrant out for his arrest, and the officer got into a scuffle, according to SPD media officers. The officer sent out a radio call for back-up (the reason for the big response), but was able to take the man into custody quickly.

The man’s shoulder was injured during the struggle, and SFD Medics responded to treat him. His injuries were not serious enough to require a trip to the hospital. The officer was also treated for scraped knees.

UPDATE: Here’s the police version of events from SPD: Continue reading

Man suspected of shooting Milliken arrested

Ja’mari Alexander-Alan Jones

The man suspected of shooting and killing DeShawn Milliken in a Bellevue bar Christmas Eve was arrested in Lakewood Wednesday evening, according to the Seattle Times. Milliken, who has strong CD ties, was 30.

The suspect, 19-year-old Ja’mari Alexander-Alan Jones, was charged with the crime last week, and a warrant was issued for his arrest. Though young, Jones has already made headlines for being one of the juveniles who pleaded guilty to killing Ed “Tuba Man” McMichael in 2008. He was pulled over for driving an allegedly stolen car, and the officers arrested him once he realized who he was.

The Times has more details on the shooting, which took place in the crowded Munchbar: Continue reading

Why Rep. Adam Smith voted against the so-called ‘fiscal cliff’ bill

Representative Adam Smith, who represents most of the Central District (excluding Madrona), was one of only 16 Democrats in the House who voted against the so-called fiscal cliff bill that passed Congress this week. The bill includes higher income tax rates for people making over $400,000 per year, but also includes an increase in payroll taxes that most Americans will feel.

In a press release, Smith explains why he did not like the bill (and no, his reasons are not exactly the same as the 151 Republicans who voted against it). From his office:

“I voted against the fiscal cliff deal because it left too much uncertainty for government programs, lacked a realistic path towards deficit reduction, and fell short in providing necessary revenues to effectively move towards fiscal responsibility. Continue reading

Happy New Year, Central District!

I hope your holidays have been as pleasant as mine! We will return to our regularly scheduled programming shortly. But first, there’s one more party.

We already posted about the stories that loomed over the CD in 2012. Now it’s time to ring in the new year and hope for a 2013 with more smiles and good will for all.

Here at CDNews, we have two resolutions for 2013:

  1. Reach out more to area businesses, both for news and advertising
  2. Feature more community voices on these pages

But, if you’re not quite ready to talk 2013, then let’s talk ending 2012 right. Our sister site Capitol Hill Seattle has a list of nearby New Year’s Eve parties. We know of a few NYE happenings in the CD, but be sure to let us know if we missed anything (either comment below or email [email protected]). Continue reading

Victim in Christmas Eve Bellevue shooting was CD man

The man killed in an early Christmas Eve shooting at a Bellevue bar has been identified as the CD’s DeShawn “D.Mill” Milliken.

Friends are mourning his death, and a website has been set up to help raise money to help his family. From the fundraiser page:

This fundraiser was created in hopes of helping Mr. Milliken’s family with funeral and memorial expenses.  On Christmas Eve of 2012, Deshawn Milliken was called home, as he was senselessly gunned down while celebrating the Seahawks victory inside a Bellevue establishment called the Munch Bar.  Losing Deshawn is a blow not only to friends and family but to the whole community.  Often serving as the “glue” between his family and friends, he will be missed.

Deshawn was a father, brother, son, uncle, grandson, friend, provider, protector and role model to many.  A beacon of positivity, Deshawn touched many lives.  For instance, he adopted a daughter, fed the less fortunate, and took care of numerous at-risk youths in the central district area that lacked  father figures.  He was the type of person that would you give you his car while he rode the bus.  He was extremely caring, loving, protecting, and always willing to lend a helping hand. After busy year, a holiday note from Casa Latina

Casa Latina recently celebrated the opening of their campus expansion on Jackson. The organization is making ambitious attempts to grow its ability to serve workers, and they urged people to help them succeed. From Casa Latina:

Dear friends,

In this season celebrating hope, family, community, and giving, Casa Latina has much to be grateful for.

2012 has been an incredible year for Casa Latina—a time of both growth and challenge as we realize our dream of building a new facility that represents hope and stability for our constituents, a home for opportunity for Latino immigrants.

With support from allies and our community, we took a calculated risk and have stretched as an organization, moving forward with our capital campaign while continuing to focus resources on our core programs. Continue reading
