Two arrested in armed robbery at 21st and Yesler

Two suspects were arrested after they allegedly robbed a person at gunpoint near 21st and Yesler July 16.

The victim was walking home from a convenience store near 20th and Yesler around 10 p.m. when a group of teens came up from behind him and surrounded him. One had a gun and held it to his chest while the others emptied his pockets, according to the police report:

After the suspects fled, the victim ran home and immediately called 911. Officers checked the area, and an unknown woman pointed an officer toward the church at 21st and Fir. Officers located a suspect and chased him down. The victim was able to identify him as one of the people who went through his pockets.

As the officer and victim were driving back to the victim’s home, they noticed another suspect walking near 22nd and Alder. The victim identified him as the suspect who held the gun.

Both suspects were booked, one to King County jail and one to the King County Youth Services Center.

A search of the area by the K9 unit discovered a black and silver .45 caliber handgun and the victim’s cell phone. The gun was submitted to evidence and the phone was returned to the victim.

Coyote Central unveiling art-covered fence July 21

The Central District is already covered in artwork from Coyote Central’s Hit the Streets program. The aluminum cherry tree near the Garfield Community Center, the art-covered facade of Medgar Evers pool and the concrete benches at Powell Barnett Park are among the many projects the youth creativity organization has created.

Young people in this summer’s Hit the Streets program will unveil their newest project at 1 p.m. July 21 near the organization’s new location at 23rd and Cherry.

From the group’s CDN event post:

On Thursday, July 21, a fence – filled with artwork – will be installed on Coyote’s East Lot on Cherry Street. A stellar team of Coyote Hit the Streets participants have been creating the art panels – cutting on chop saws, carving cedar, and bending metal.

Anniversary picnic marks feminist party’s founding

In July 1966 the Freedom Socialist Party was launched in response to explosive Black civil rights and antiwar activism – a time of upheaval not unlike today. Hear about the raucous debates over leadership, socialism, anarchism and women’s status in society and the movement – as hippies and Marxists alike grappled with the problems facing a new generation of rebels.

July 31 also marks the completion of the four-month Freedom Socialist $80,000 Fund Drive and the festivities will include a toast to the many people who donated their time, skills and money to keep the corporate-free presses rolling!

Mount Zion Baptist Church to host Seattle Wholesale Market

Starting July 20 through August 31, Moving Together in Faith & Health will host the Seattle Wholesale Market at Mount Zion Baptist Church on Wednesdays.  Moving Together in Faith & Health is an interdenominational consortium of churches with one mission — promoting health in communities of color and low-income neighborhoods in King County through church policy and systems change. The faith-based group is partnering with the Puget Sound Food Network to coordinate the weekly market.

With the Seattle Wholesale Market, Moving Together in Faith & Health will help local communities in two important ways. First, the market will provide church food programs with affordable, nutritious foods that prevent the diseases associated with poor diet. Second, the market will connect local businesses with small and mid-sized farmers who offer fresh produce at discounted rates.

Unlike traditional farmers markets, the Seattle Wholesale Market is not geared towards individuals, but instead focuses on local businesses that need larger quantities of food at discounted prices. These include restaurants, grocery buyers, hospitals, preschools, churches and senior centers.

Velotropolis Central District bike tour kicks off CSA-by-bike service July 23

Sean Conroe from Alleycat Acres, Liz Nixon from Bike Works, the wonderful folks from Clean Greens and myself, CDN’s humble editor, have been working on a side project called Fork + Frame. The concept is pretty simple: Clean Greens (operated out of the Central District with a farm in Duvall) has more locally-grown produce than CSA subscribers, and we like bikes and supporting local agriculture.

So Fork and Frame is a service that will deliver the Clean Greens CSA to your Capitol Hill or Central District doorstep via bicycle every week (see map of delivery area). Best part: The delivery is free of charge.

To kick the whole project off, we’re holding a neighborhood bicycle adventure July 23. Velotropolis will test your knowledge with the neighborhood (or teach you all about it) while taking you on a tour. At the end, we’ll have home-cooked food and prizes. Entry is $5 and up (donate what you can, proceeds go to Clean Greens). You don’t have to sign up for the CSA or live in the area to go on the ride. Most of all, we want to have fun with good people and good food in our wonderful neighborhood. If you want to join us, sign up online.

Aside from the CSA service, Clean Greens will have market stands around the neighborhood, including their office at 21st and Fir, starting July 23. Their list of market locations and times will be updated as the market season gets under way.

Details from the Fork + Frame website:

What: A bike adventure throughout the Central District.

Bring your thinking caps! You’ll get clues for different historical points of interest within the neighborhood. Then it’s up to you to get to the next checkpoint — cruising around the city streets, putting your knowledge of the CD to the test. (But don’t worry — we won’t object to bringing along a bike map or using a smart phone if you don’t know where to go.) Oh, and don’t forget to dress up in a costume!

When: Saturday, July 23rd, 2011
Time: 12 PM – 2 PM, followed by a block party
Location: TBA; Various.

Cost: Sliding scale, $5 – Whatever you can afford. The person who donates the most during registration will win a 1 month CSA share (valued at $120).

Swag & Prizes: At the end of the adventure, each rider will be well nourished with an amazing home cooked meal + bbq. Yum! Plus you’ll have an opportunity for one of the prizes below:

1. 1 Month CSA Share: Awarded to the person who donated the most upon registration;
2. 2 Week CSA Share: Awarded to the person who has the most awesome costume.
3. 1 Week CSA Share: Awarded randomly for all cycylists completing the ride.

When the suspect approached him at King’s Deli near MLK and Cherry July 16 and offered to sell him two Honda lawnmowers, the man was intrigued. After all, he had two similar lawnmowers stolen from him recently, according to the police report.

He asked the suspect to show him the mowers. Once he confirmed they were his, he confronted the suspect about the mowers being stolen.

The suspect then allegedly pulled out a “razor blade” knife and attempted to open it. The man was able to get the knife out of the suspect’s hands and restrain him until police arrived.

When the officer told him he as being video recorded, the suspect said the officer was being recorded and that he would have Obama fire him.

The man got his mowers back.
