Advocates of human rights will hold a rally at the Mexican Consulate to protest the jailing of Seattle-area resident and indigenous leader Nestora Salgado. The community police defended residents against a wave of murder, intimidation and rape by organized crime and corrupt officials. Solidarity rallies will also be held in Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City and Portland, Oregon. For more info email [email protected] or call 206-722-2453.

Seattle Schools’ newly approved boundary changes will impact Central District families

At an epic seven-hour meeting Wednesday night, the Seattle School Board voted on several amendments and school boundary changes that will have deep impacts on families with children living in the Central District.

Among the most significant changes is the board’s approval to open The World School, for immigrant children, in the T.T. Minor building. This change comes despite a vocal outcry from Central District families who wanted T.T. Minor to be used as a traditional elementary school. The group cited data that shows almost 500 children living within T.T. Minor’s walk zone and a projected growth to 600 by 2017.

The World School is currently housed in Meany Middle School, which will reopen as a traditional middle school in 2017. Students from Stevens and Lowell would join those from Madrona (K-8), McGilvra, and Montlake in Capitol Hill’s Meany campus when its $14.2 million overhaul is complete in 2017. Currently, students from those schools all feed into Washington Middle School in the Central District.

Several school boundaries also changed, with Stevens Elementary losing its Central District students. Madrona K-8’s boundaries have also shifted.

Seattle Public Schools has a grandfathering policy for elementary school students, who are allowed to stay in their current schools despite the boundaries shift. But students in 5th, 6th, and 7th grade will be forced to attend the middle school dictated by the new boundaries starting next year.

The board also decided Wednesday night to institute an annual process of boundary adjustments. So in theory we could see changes like this every year.

The district has posted a full list of boundary changes for elementary schools with maps to its site. Middle school maps are still pending as of this writing.

Sunday Sippers Annual Port Tasting

Kopke Port Old LadyPorts are diverse and delicious.  And as the cold weather hits they keep the chill away.  Stop by on Sunday to sip some of these tasty delights from two old Port houses Kopke and Rocha.  Local Port expert Sarah Timbrook-Nugent will be with us to talk about different styles of Port and the history of these venerable producers.

Porto Kopke Lágrima White Port  — $18 – 750ml bottle
Oak-aged for 5 years, the wine is produced from a variety of white grapes, including Malvasia Fina. So loved by the Portuguese as to be called “The Tears of Christ”, the wine has a wonderful, medium-sweet style with citrus and lemon verbena fruit that is balanced by good acidity.  Serve slightly chilled as an aperitif with hot-spicy starters, with fruit salads, desserts or just let your imagination run wild.

Porto Kopke 10 Year Old Tawny   $15 – 375ml bottle , $30 – 750ml
Tawny ports are made from red grapes, but the ageing in barrel exposes them to oxidation. As a result, they gradually mellow to a golden-brown color and develop “nutty” flavors. Kopke’s 10 YO Tawney is so well developed that it has the quality of most 20 Year Olds. Kopke overshoots the required age of the wines in this blend by at least five years. So this would qualify as a 15 Year old if that labeling existed. Honey colored, with deep ambrosial flavors and mouth-filling richness. “Fine nose of toasted almonds with butterscotch & honey. Smooth, unctuous and very tasty…I liked this Kopke for the textural pleasure and pure nutty flavor that led to the persistent aftertaste.” 91 pts. Roy Hersh, For the Love of Port

2007 Porto Rocha Late Bottled Vintage Port   $14 – 375ml bottle,  $24   -750ml
This LBV is aged 4 to 6 years in cask before release to soften up and develop the wine.  This “preview” of the Vintage Port, provides a smooth drinking, full-bodied, filtered port with exciting ripe fruit flavors of plum, black cherry and a touch of pepper.

Madrona Wine Merchants offers free wine tastings featuring 4-5 selections on a theme every Saturday from 2 until the bottles run out and on Sunday we offer a mini-tasting of two wines all day from 11-5. No matter what day you stop by we always have something open to sample.

French Thanksgiving Wines

clos cristal 1France has always made great food wines, so it is natural when we come up to the holiday that is centered around food that some French wines leap to mind. This Saturday we’ll be tasting a few that match a wide range of Thanksgiving treats.  Come try these great food wines and find something to put on the table come Turkey day.

2011 Clos de Nouys, Vouvray, demi-sec  $14
Chenin Blanc
Clos de Nouys is a 25 acre estate in Vouvray in the Loire Valley with 35 years old vines.  The wine has aromas of white flowers and quince, with a full mouthfeel, crisp structure and an aromatic finish.  Its balancing act between fresh acidity and rich flavor is lipsmacking.

2012 Marion Pral Beaujolais Rouge $13
Gamay Noir
Pral is a 50 acre family run, organic estate, located in the heart of Beaujolais. The Rouge is loaded with sweetly-ripe blackberry and peach fruit, its tang and brightness of tart fruit skin and saline mineral notes give this insistency on the palate.  Its vibrancy can wash down even the lumpiest gravy.

2011 Le Hospices, Sancerre Rouge $20
Pinot Noir
Sancerre is known for its Sauvignon Blanc, but the region also grows some fine Pinot Noir as well.  The Hospices is a light bodied, aromatic wine with cherry and berry flavors, fresh acidity and a round finish.  It cuts through the stuffing without stuffing you.

2010 Clos Cristal $22
Cabernet Franc
Clos Cristal is 10 hectares biodynamical farmed vineyards which contain 2 miles of walls along which, and through which, the Cab Franc vines grow. Close to the walls, the vine takes advantage of the heat accumulated by the stone, which enables a greater ripeness. The Cristal is a concentrated and expressive wine with dark, black fruit aromas held in a firmly tannic grip. It is big enough to slap any menu around, but elegant enough to complement the food while doing it.

2009 Antonine Moueix, Fleur Renaissance Sauternes $33 full bottle  $16 half bottle
70% Semillon, 30% Sauvignon Blanc
During harvest the fog from the Garonne River covers the fields causing the grapes to develop the noble rot, botrytis, which concentrates the sugars and gives the wine its distinct flavors.  The grapes for the Renaissance are hand-picked in five passes selecting for optimal ripeness.  The wine is full and complex fruit flavors of apricot, peach, pear and honey along with a signature botrytis note. The perfect finish for any meal.
