Last Thursday, July 16th, we held a joint African American Advisory Council and East Precinct Crime Prevention Coalition meeting at Langston Hughes Cultural Arts Center.

Robert Hood, Chief of the Public and Community Safety Division of the Seattle City Attorney’s Office, Tienney Milnor, East Precinct City Attorney Liaison, and East Precinct Captain Paul McDonagh presented information related to the Drug Market Initiative (DMI).

A new approach to reducing street level drug dealing in our community, DMI is a collaborative effort between the Seattle Police Department, the Seattle City Attorney’s Office and the community.

As the community’s participation is a critical component of DMI, attendees gathered in small groups to discuss ideas that would support the effectiveness and success of the DMI initiative, resulting in outstanding strategies.

Therefore, we are are holding a follow-up meeting to continue to develop these strategies and identify methods of actual implementation:

Gentrification putting squeeze on black businesses

KING 5 Story from June, stumbled upon via the usual circuitous path of “the internets”.

11:35 AM PDT on Tuesday, June 26, 2007

 By KATHERINE SATHER / KING5.com

As far as Lottie Cross is concerned, there is no Central District in Seattle anymore.

Gentrification has changed the character of the historically African American neighborhood.

“It’s phasing out,” she said.

But as condos sprout up on street corners and new white, middle class families move in, some say an integral part of the community has been victimized. Black businesses struggle even as new wealth enters their neighborhood.

Can we save the old Horace Mann School?

Interesting article in Crosscut.

Excerpt:

Those ideas for adaptive reuse of the old schoolhouse are exactly the wrong kind of uses for the building, says local property owner Ron Rubin. He urges the city to “resist the temptation to turn [Mann] into low-income housing or drug counseling” or any use that’s not financially “sustainable,” but instead focus on a commercial venture that will “make it an anchor in the neighborhood” akin to the Wallingford Center, another former school turned into retail space. Rubin has a vested interest in the neighborhood; he owns a 12-unit apartment building across the street from Nova and a series of garages nearby that he wants to convert to micro-businesses. Though he’s personally not interested in purchasing the building, he believes “the minute it’s closed, it should go up for sale.” There’s no doubt in his mind that an empty Mann building will attract “trash, vandalism, graffiti, drug dealing, and prostitution.”

“As the landlord, I think the school district has an obligation to the community. My fear is that they are not going to uphold their responsibility as a property owner and there is going to be a blight. It could easily sit vacant for two-three years.” He continues, “The city spent 10 years and $115 million on the Garfield project, yet there is nothing in that neighborhood that encourages pedestrianism or discourages drug-dealing. They should protect the investment they made in Garfield and the community at large. All the pieces fit together.”
