Metro and MassTransportation

During May 28th Town Hall meeting at Roosevlet High School with Larry Gossett regarding transportation it became clear that many changes and additions to bus routes and some to ferry routes will be considered during the next year. The next few months is the window of opportunity to comment with some hope of having a direct affect on mass transit plans. The 520 bridge and service to the light rail stations are also under consideration.

King County Council members are very important members of the Metro Board which oversees all bus routes, light rail, and West Seattle Ferry issues but has little say in the tracked street car plans. However, all the various forms of transportation compete for resources, dollars and street space.

Since the Town Hall meeting on May 28 was targeted mainly toward North East Seattle and Montlake (although I was welcome and my comments noted), it would behove others to contact both the offices of Larry Gossett and Larry Phillips regarding transportation concerns. A Town Hall meeting here where residents could share ideas and concerns with each other and the Council members would be productive and interesting to all.

In the meantime, to advocate for either your issues or a Townhall Meeting regarding Metro contact information for both Council members is below along with the contact information for the planner who was available at the May 28th meeting and the link to Metro in general:

Agenda Item notes for Squire Park Community Council, Sat.

From Squire Park Community Council:

At The Squire Park Community Council meeting Saturday April 12 — 10:00 A.M. at Langston Hughes Performing Arts Center representatives of the East Precinct Crime Prevention Coalition will appear to talk and answer questions about public safety issues in the neighborhood. Sita DeGiulio Das of the Seattle Neighborhood Group, Stephanie Tschida of the City Law Department, Mike Yasutake of the Police Department, and possibly another representative of the Police Department will be there.

This is a chance for those who have been unable to attend the monthly East Precinct Crime Prevention Coalition meetings to talk about these issues.

And, there’ll be time for you to talk to your neighbors about other neighborhood things on your mind.

Drop-In-Center update

Greetings 23rd & Union Neighbors,

I hope you are all doing well. As promised, here is an update on the status of the SPD Drop In Center on 23rd & Union:

We raised a total of $605.00 in donations from neighbors. Neighbors also donated a refrigerator, computer, microwave, coffee pot/coffee, and chairs, all in excellent condition. Thank you so much for your contributions, time, and hard work at the clean up. The Drop In Center has been used and appreciated by East Precinct officers.

The money donated is being used for the following:

Bottled water for officers
Cleaning supplies
Weekly office cleaning ($25 per week). We are paying GOTS (Get Off The Streets) clients to do the cleaning. This helps them by allowing them some positive work history, and a work reference from Kay Godefroy, SNGâ??s Executive Director. For more information about GOTS, please contact Mary Williams, GOTS Program Coordinator, at 206.323.9584 or [email protected].

Internet: Many of you have contacted me with questions regarding internet at the site. I apologize for not getting back to people sooner with information about this, but it took some time for us to figure out the best way to approach internet while taking everyoneâ??s needs into account. As it turns out, the most feasible internet option will cost $59.00 per month. It will be broadband, so I donâ??t think the computer will need any additional equipment, but we will also be purchasing a wireless router so officers are able to access internet on their laptops at the Drop In Center. We will need additional contributions before we install.

We are collecting donations to cover the costs incurred by internet and cleaning. If you are interested in donating, you can send/drop off donations at SNG (1810 E Yesler Way, Seattle WA 98122). Checks can be made out to Seattle Neighborhood Group, as SNG is the fiscal sponsor. Please make sure to include â??23rd & Union Drop Inâ?? in the memo line, for processing purposes. Also, be sure to include your address, so that we may send you a letter for charitable contributions for tax deduction purposes.

Thank You,

23rd & Union SPD Drop-in Center

Greetings Block Watch Captains and 23rd & Union Neighbors,

The 23rd & Union SPD Drop-in Center is just about complete; all we need is a little bit of community support from your Block Watch groups. There are two ways in which community members can support and contribute to this project:

1. Participating in a neighborhood clean-up for the drop in center.
The space is ready to go, it just needs to be made user friendly! We will get together for a couple of hours to do a clean-up in and around the drop in center. This will entail trash pick-up, vacuuming, sweeping, cleaning the bathroom, dusting and moving around some furniture and equipment. As soon as this has happened, the Drop-in
Center will be up an running. Saturday March 8th or Saturday March 22nd are two possible options. Please let me know if either of these dates work for you and your Block Watch groups, or if you would like to plan for a different date. It doesn’t have to be on a Saturday, I just thought that Saturdays may be convenient for people. Sundays are not the best option, because Officer Greeley isn’t available; however, the important thing is that the date works best for neighbors.

2. Donating either money or items from the “items we need” list below that are in good condition and only gently used if used at all. Any donation to this project will count as a charitable contribution; Seattle Neighborhood Group (SNG) will provide anyone who donates with a letter of charitable contribution for tax deduction. The money we
collect will go towards basic maintenance of the Drop-in Center and towards needed supplies that are not collected through donation. Donations can be brought to the SNG office (address is below) anytime Monday through Friday between the hours of 10am and 2pm. If you need to schedule either a different time to drop off your donation or if you
need to schedule for someone to pick up your donation, please contact me to set that up ([email protected] or 322.9330). You can also mail a donation to:

Sarah Smith
Seattle Neighborhood Group
1810 E Yesler Way
Seattle, WA 98122-5748

If you mail in a donation, please make sure to include your name, address, phone # and that the money is for the 23rd & Union Drop-in Center. This will ensure our ability to provide you with letter of charitable contribution. If you are thinking of donating an item, please check with me first to make sure nobody else has already donated
that item!

Items We Need:
Coffee Maker
Refrigerator
Microwave
Vacuum
Computer w/ internet hook up
Round table
Six chairs (without armrests is preferred)
Cleaning Supplies

Please pass this information along to your block watch groups and neighbors and get back to me regarding a good date to do the clean-up.
Thank you for your support.

Kindest Regards,
