Saturday: Learn about Deano’s site redevelopment

Saturday Morning, 9AM – ?? , developer Jim Mueller will be at the (rapidly vanishing) “”Deano’s” site at 21st & Denny/Madison.

In his own words; ” it will be a neighborhood reception to meet and greet with signup opportunity for feedback and invites to any neighborhood meetings we’ll be holding”.

Great chance to chat with Jim and learn about his plans for the redevelopment plans there. As the plans stand now: http://homepage.mac.com/andrew_taylor/MPNA/PhotoAlbum3.html

23rd & Union Saturday Clean & Green with the Mayor

The usual suspects met in a light drizzle at Midtown Center (SE corner of 23rd & Union) to await the Mayor at the Clean & Green event. Groups of people under Department of Corrections supervision were busy picking up trash up and down the street, as were groups of young people (volunteers, I presume).

The Mayor arrived and posed with various people for pictures. Central Area neighbor Carolyn Walden showed the fountain on the plaza to the Mayor: it’s the Fountain of Triumph, sculpted by the late James Washington, Jr., the noted African-American
artist. She told him of previous neighborhood efforts to get the fountain working again and seems to have got him (and the City) interested in helping getting the water flowing again.

Developer Jim Mueller (whose building site across the street was being mowed as we met) and Tom Bangasser (owner of the property where the fountain sits) were also seen chatting next to (and maybe about?) the fountain.

The Mayor, Jim Mueller and I chatted about redevelopment of the Madison Street area, and whether the Mayor’s proposed “Homes within Reach” program would allow Jim to build affordable housing in his buildings on Madison.

The Mayor said a few words of encouragement, posed for more pictures and then grabbed paint and roller and set out across the street to paint out graffiti on the side of Richlin’s Super Mini. He eventually returned to the displays and goodies, in time to have his ear bent again by yours truly.

Congratulations Marty Liebowitz

Local builder of darling little projects (Miller Mews, Yesler Mews, Secret Garden) and member of the Central Area Neighborhood Plan Land Use, Open Space and Housing Committee, Marty Liebowitz has received the approval of the Stranger’s Blog ( the Slog) for his proposed development at MLK & Union:

Marty Liebowitz, of the Madrona Company, says he’s planning a four-story building that will contain up to 30 rental units in the top floors (several for low-income tenants), office space on the second floor, eight storefronts on the street level, and eight music-practice spaces in the basement.

“The rock-and-roll kids only make 10 to 20 thousand dollars a year,” says Liebowitz. “So we’re trying to create a scenario where they can live, a place to practice their music, and maybe a venue where they can perform.” He says the musicians can’t afford to live on Capitol Hill, so he’s building affordable rentals and spaces for inexpensive restaurants in the Central District.

June 14th Neighborhood Garage Sale

It’s called the Capitol Hill Community Garage Sale Day, it’s Saturday June 14th, and it’s organized by http://www.capitolhillseattle.com blogger Justin, but I bet you can piggyback onto it! The idea is to give local citizens a day to rally around to get rid of some junk, do some recycling and meet neighbors.
Sign up at http://www.capitolhillgaragesale.com to register your address.
Live in an apartment? There are TWO locations where there will be tables available (register for one at same address).
One community location will be provided by Jim Mueller LLC at the old Deano’s site[that he’s just bought] near Madison and East Denny. Free coffee and donuts. Jim will say a few words about his development plans at about 9 AM.
