Open House for the long awaited Colman Building

LURC-Logo-Text-OnlyDetails from the Central Area Land Use Review Committee (CA LURC):

The newly formed CA LURC would like to invite you to attend an Open House at Douglass Truth Library on July 17th from 6:30 – 7:45 pm where we will be getting a preview of the long awaited Colman Building to be constructed at 2203 E Union St. The project, now slated to begin construction in August, went through its Design Review process with the City in early 2008 and has since been purchased by Ian Eisenberg. Lake Union Partners will manage the development process and has offered to provide the neighborhood with a refresher on the building’s design as well as help nearby neighbors anticipate any upcoming impacts that may arise due to construction. Please note that this project has already been approved through the City’s official Design Review process and has been issued a Master Use Permit based on that design. As such, this meeting will be focused on providing residents with clarification on the current design but will not delve into potential modifications of the design.

But wait there’s more!

Immediately following the Colman Building presentation, the CA LURC would like to introduce themselves to the neighborhood and tell you what they’re all about. The CA LURC is composed of residents just like you who want to take an active role in shaping development as it enters our neighborhood. We’ve spent a year getting to know people in the neighborhood, in an effort to avoid being “yet another community group” – so please stick around for the second half of our meeting to hear more about what we’ve been up to and how you can get involved!

Proposed changes for Seattle’s Comprehensive Plan includes new directions for 23rd Ave

It’s time for another round of “who wants to make a public comment?” and you’ll get a chance to win civic props — or change the course of CD development — during a Thursday July 11 meeting of the City Council’s Planning, Land Use, and Sustainability Committee.

In this edition, the committee is looking over nine submitted proposals – one in our hood – and the council wants your feedback before they take the proposed comprehensive plan to bat next year – making it official.

Proposed measure #4 that will impact the Central District comes from the Department of Planning and Development. The proposal states:

Amend the Future Land Use Map and goals and policies for this neighborhood plan to update the neighborhood’s goals and policies to reflect the current aspirations of the neighborhood’s residents and business owners, including potential Future Land Use Map and zoning changes at the key nodes of 23rd at East Union Street, East Cherry Street, and East Jackson Street.

The meeting will be held at City Hall this Thursday at 5:30 pm (Council Chambers, 2nd floor). If you cannot make it written comment can be submitted to Sara Nelson – [email protected] — or to Council member Richard Conlin. Details on the public hearing follow:

Every year the City Council considers amendments to the City’s Comprehensive Plan. Each spring the Council invites proposed amendments from the public and from City departments. In the summer the Council adopts a policy docket that lists which of these proposed amendments it will consider for adoption the next year.

The City Council’s Planning, Land Use and Sustainability Committee will hold a public hearing to take comments o n the proposed Comprehensive Plan policy docket on Thursday,July 11, 2013, at 5:30 p.m., in Council Chambers on t he 2nd floor of City Hall, 600 4th Avenue. Entrances to City Hall are on the west side of 5th Avenue and the east side of 4th A venue between James and Cherry Streets. For those who wish to provide comments, sign-up sheets will be available outside the auditorium at 5 p.m.on the day of the hearing.

The Chambers are accessible. To request accommodation, please contact Sara Nelson at 206-684-5337 or mailto:[email protected] as soon as possible. Directions to City Hall, and information about transit access and parking, are available at http://www.seattle.gov/council/visiting_city_hall.htm.

Solar Group Purchase Campaign Launches for Central and Southeast Seattle

Seattle, WA – Solar energy is currently powering hundreds of Seattle homes, and residents of Capitol Hill, the Central District, Beacon Hill, Rainier Valley, and other central and southeast Seattle neighborhoods are about to get a special opportunity to add their rooftops to our city’s growing solar array. Through a nonprofit-led program called Solarize Seattle, homes and small businesses can qualify for special pricing and take advantage of many incentives that make solar installations more affordable than ever.

Northwest Sustainable Energy for Economic Development (Northwest SEED) and Seattle City Light are working with several community groups to launch Solarize Seattle: Central/Southeast, a solar energy education and installation program that starts today and runs through October.  The program will be co-led by a community coalition of local volunteers, which will spearhead neighborhood outreach. Supporting organizations include Sustainable Seattle, Sustainable Capitol Hill, and Sustainable Central District.

The campaign features a group-buy program that provides a streamlined process for residents and small businesses to purchase solar systems for a discounted price. Participants learn how solar works in Seattle, how it is installed, what tax and production incentives are available to bring the price down, and how low-interest financing can spread out the cost.  The limited-time campaign intends to install over 200 kilowatts of solar energy in central and southeast Seattle by the end of 2013.

Through a competitive bidding process, the Solarize Seattle: Central/Southeast Community Coalition selected Puget Sound Solar and Artisan Electric as the project’s solar installation team.  These contractors will offer solar systems at discounted rates to project participants.

Solarize Seattle: Central/Southeast will be the seventh campaign of Northwest SEED’s Solarize Washington program (www.solarizewa.org).  Northwest SEED’s four campaigns in Seattle have resulted in over 1 MW of solar added to the city’s electric grid.  To date, Solarize Washington campaigns have educated over 1,750 people at public workshops, encouraged nearly 300 residents to install solar on their homes, and injected more than $7.5 million into the local solar economy.

Registration for Solarize Seattle: Central/Southeast opens Monday, July 8.  Registration is open to Seattle residents who live in the geographic area bordered by the Montlake cut to the north, I-5 to the west, Lake Washington to the east, and the City of Seattle boundary to the south.  Free educational workshops will be held on Jul. 23, Aug. 15, Aug. 27, and Sep. 18.  For more information, visit www.solarizewa.org.

Vandals destroy plumbing at comfort stations in Leschi Park and Madrona Park

During the evening of July 4, vandals set explosives in the comfort stations in Leschi Park and Madrona Park, destroying the toilets and plumbing and spreading fecal matter throughout the interiors.

Park crews have shut down these stations and are beginning repairs which will take several days.

The vandals took the toilets out and shattered them with explosives, then set explosives down into the bases where the toilets sat to spread the feces.

A contamination/cleanup staff person was hard at work on July 6 with de-contamination equipment so that other crews can repair the plumbing and re-paint the interiors later.

Port-a-potties are in place in Leschi Park and Madrona.

Apparently, Police policy is not to publicize this kind of event for fear that there will be copycats.  Unfortunately, there events are fairly widespread in Central Area parks — including Pratt Park, Judkins Park and Powell Barnett Parks.  To me, this is a failed policy and avoids the issue that the care and security of our parks are inadequately funded.

Seattle welcomes traveling community service cyclist tonight

Jungle City and the Japanese Cultural & Community Center of Washington (JCCCW) are co-hosting an afternoon with Ryo Ambe, a Japanese man who is cycling 1,860 miles from San Diego to Vancouver, British Columbia. The event will be held this afternoon at 2:30pm at the JCCCW on 1414 S. Weller St.

Ryo Ambe

Ryo Ambe

Ambe is cycling to express his appreciation to the United States for its disaster relief efforts following the 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami. Ambe has been cleaning up trash at coastal beaches along his journey.

The JCCCW will welcome Ambe and thank him for his efforts as he passes through Seattle. Ambe will answer questions about his journey and light refreshments will be provided.

More info about Ambe from JCCCW:

Ambe was born in 1981 in Shiki, Saitama Prefecture Japan and he grew up in Urawa. After the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami in Japan, Ambe started his first cycling trip to contribute to relief efforts. He traversed Canada from the west coast to the east coast in 2011 by bicycle while carrying a thank you message in English and French. The donations he received during this trip were given to the Japanese consulate in Canada. Ambe then went to New Zealand in 2012 to show his appreciation for the relief efforts that New Zealand took part in for Japan. He then continued cycling for the same reasons in Taiwan. During this trip, 19 mayors representing all the cities in Taiwan met with Ambe to pass on handwritten messages of support on postcards to be sent to those living in devastated areas of Japan.

Arcaro Boxing Gym to open at the Jefferson aparments

The Central District will soon have another boxing gym. Arcaro Boxing Gym signed a lease for a street-level space at the Jefferson apartment building on 12th Avenue and E. Jefferson Street. Arcaro will offer training and coaching for non-competitive, amateur, and professional boxers.

Gym owner Tricia Arcaro Turton is a Central District resident and has coached boxers since 2004. She is currently working with Olympic hopeful Jen Hamann, who is a 2013 Continental Champion and 2013 USA Boxing National Champion.

“Arcaro Boxing will be a place where boxers can develop skills to succeed in the gym, at school, at work and home,” Turton said in a press release. “We look forward to a long relationship there with Capitol Hill Housing and the community.”

The boxing gym will cover 1,250 square feet and is hoping for an August open date. The Jefferson opened in October 2012 with 40 apartments aimed at working individuals and families. The building is sustainably designed and was made possible with funding from the City of Seattle Housing Levy and the State of Washington.
