  1. The person robbed in Sam Smith park was a cyclist. (he posted on the Cascade web site) This is about the 4th or 5th time within the last 12 months that a cyclist has been knocked off of their bike and mugged either near the entrance to the tunnel or elsewhere in the park. One person thwarted an attack by riding into the would be mugger. I believe all of the attacks have been in the afternoon/evening. If you commute through there, be careful – if possible try to not go through the park alone….

  2. There is a large homeless settlement just west of 23rd and S. Judkins, located in the bushes where S. Judkins turns into 20th Ave. S. The police have been called by neighbors many times but with no results (containment zone?). Migrant workers are also “allowed” to sleep under I-90 where the steps ascend from Rainier Ave to the I-90 bus stops. Again, no enforcement.

  3. I’m pretty sure the cameras only record onto tape – no one is actually watching them, they just record for posterity and someone can say yep some masked guys jumped another cyclist…. regular patrols, preferably of bike cops are what I think is the best solution.
As far as the homeless guys go… from the descriptions of the muggers it seems more likely that it is neighborhood teenagers than it is the homeless people. Not that I think its OK for them to be allowed to camp there so openly, but I’m not sure they have anything to do with these crimes.
