The 37th District Democrats will host a community forum on the direction of the Seattle Public Schools at the Rainier Valley Cultural Center (3515 S Alaska St) in Columbia City on Monday, May 16 from 7 – 9 p.m. All community members are welcome to attend. Admission is free, although donations are welcome.
A moderated panel of grassroots leaders and education experts will begin the evening by describing the role of the superintendent in the schools, the challenges facing our school district, and the “achievement gap” between schools in economically stressed communities (many in the Central and South areas of Seattle) and schools in wealthier neighborhoods.
Public comment will be invited after the panel discussion and there will be opportunities for written feedback. Notes from the forum will be forwarded to all school board members and other stakeholders in the superintendent hiring process.
