Once upon a time the steep slope of Madison Street was only accessible by cable cars. Sadly they’re long gone, replaced by pavement, but the steepness still causes problems every fall when oil-slicked streets combine with early rains, resulting in a lot of slipping tires and the occasional accident.
But never fear: the city has a plan. Paving crews and contractors will be grinding down the pavement to improve vehicle traction starting Wednesday, and continuing on Friday 9/17 and Monday 9/20. The work will take place from 23rd down to MLK in the valley, going from 8am to 4:30pm.
And although the city says that one lane will remain open in each direction, be prepared for traffic backups and consider using alternate routes.
