Shooting Victim Named, Mourned

Both the Seattle Times and Seattle PI have named yesterday’s shooting victim as Tyrone Love, a local music promoter and event organizer. Once again Claudia Rowe at the PI has the better story:

Well-known in his Central District neighborhood, Love has no criminal record and often helps support his mother, who is raising a teenage daughter. The bulk of his work experience, other than party promotions, is in after-school care for children.  ….

“Tyrone was really upbeat, always smiling, the kind of guy you’d like to run into if you were having a bad day because he always saw the glass as half-full,” said Cross, former student body president at Garfield who now works as an advertising copywriter.

A lot of commenters on yesterday’s story also knew Love and mentioned what a loss they thought this was for the community.  Everyone who knew Love speaks very highly of him, and says that he steered clear of gangs and worked at the YMCA to help kids stay out of trouble.

But right now it doesn’t look like this was a random attack. Witnesses say that the suspect vehicle circled the block a couple of times before the shooting occurred. The PI article also gets into some speculation from an anonymous police source that it could have been an attempt to silence a witness to the November shooting at Vito’s on First Hill. No further details on that are given on that possible connection.

  1. Kudos to Claudia Rowe for this and other stories she has written over the past year. She has approached our area’s situation and problems and hopes with a rare and consistent sensitivity that I really appreciate and hope that others do also. Her column will be one of the aspects of the P-I that I will miss the most when that newspaper goes down next month.

  2. I knew this kind young man from my days going to the YMCA. He was such a positive person and he lifted people up that he interacted with.

He will be missed my many.

    Anna

  3. A young black man makes a living in a positive way and is a good influence on young people. Who is threatened by this? You know the answer.

  4. This kid was a saint!
So where is the outrage by the Seattle Community? Where is the manhunt that would be constantly in all the news media? God I hate to say it again but if this was a kid in Wallingford or Queen Ann there would be a city wide outrage! If anything could come from this hideous act is that there is a manhunt, a citywide outrage and the vile criminal are hunted down and locked up!
Or will it be business as usual, living in a crime containment zone, located in a politely racist city!

  5. I only knew Tyrone as the guy who greeted me at the front desk at the YMCA when I was a member. He was always great to talk with. I wish I’d gotten to know him better, now.

I’m thinking a donation to the YMCA in his name…?

  6. Is it possible that Tyrone’s case is a horrible one of mistaken identity? Could he have been mistaken for someone else?

Regardless, the whole thing is a tragedy. And a total waste. I just feel so angry.

  7. Yes. Lets start with the witness who saw the vehicle circle the block two time but cant describe it!

  8. Unbelievable. I hope that the people of Seattle “proper” wake up and realize that the senseless shootings in the CD need to stop, as does the gangbanging. However, judging from all of the other black youth who have been killed this past year, I don’t see that happening anytime soon. It is just unfortunate that a good man had to be senselessly killed for nothing; a good man who dedicated his time to IMPROVING his community and not wrecking it.

With the opening of the Twilight Exit on Cherry, I thought I would be able to grab a few beers and walk home at night without having to worry about getting shot (stray bullet or otherwise). This is just senseless.

  9. I too knew Tyrone from the YMCA, and also had the pleasure of seeing him around from time to time, he had a contagious smile and great energy…I am so sad…I hope we can help his family through something at the Y.
I hope that this doesn’t go by unwitnessed to other communities.

  10. I am tired of this gang war that the city is doing nothing about it. The police know who the gang kids are! We need them off the street.

Can we organize a march from 26th and Cherry to the Mayor’s office? I’ve never organized a march before, but I am tired of this violence. The city is doing nothing about this wave of violence and is even cutting police resources to the East Precinct.

  11. How about a city wide sharing of concern and a well covered manhunt! How about Mayro Nickels and the Police Cheif comming to the CD for a well covered press conference offering a reward like they did in Wallingford last year!

  12. How about Mayor Nickels and the Police Chief comming to the CD for a well covered press conference offering a reward like they did in Wallingford last year!

  13. It would really help the manhunt if people would actually come forward with information! In Queen Anne and Wallingford, people aren’t under the “no snitching” rule that seems so pervasive in the CD. “No, I didn’t see a thing . . .” means that these guys will never get convicted!! Come on — it’s not racism, it’s the “community rules” like no snitching that lead to a lack of arrests.

  14. I too knew Tyrone from the Y. When he was at the front desk he would always greet me by name and with a smile. He certainly had good customer service. Others have posted about a donation in his name – you can contact the Meredith Mathews Y at 322-6969 and I’m sure they would be happy to help honor his memory.

    Such a sad loss.

  15. What is going on around here?!? When a young black man gets killed there is no uproar except for in the black community or from people who knew him personally but when a bike rider or someone elderly gets ran down by a hit-and-run it becomes the city’s problem?! We need to organize a stop the violence campaign right HERE and right NOW!! We don’t want Seattle to be the next murder capital this is getting out of control!

And to address L.J. there is a possiblity that this witness told the police more than what is being published and it’s being kept under wrap out of safety for this witness and her family.

  16. You do realize this happened at 2 AM, right?

I heard the shots-this all happened less than 100 feet from my house. There was no-one on the street that night, no commotion, no yelling, no screaming, no crying, no running, after the shots, no noise at all.

From what I have heard there was just one witness who did come forward with what she knew. I got the impression she just happened to see it.

Don’t make assumptions. Maybe no-one saw it, except the people who did it.

    a neighbor

  17. I like the idea of donating to the Y in his name, but I also remember that he helped support his mother. I hope there’s a fund set up to help her cover burial costs.

  18. Now as far as the memorial services that will be announced on a later date… We are trying to raise money for the Funeral Exspenses for Tyrone we want our Vibrant Brother to go out in style, Sunday we will be having a benefit concert at Columbia City Theater with live R & B and spoken word from seattles finest..all proceeds 100% will be gave to Tyrone Loves mother…..Also there is a Bank of America Account just created but **YOU CANT PUT ANY MONEY INTO THE ACCOUNT UNTIL TOMORROW** you go to the teller at any bank of america after today and tell them you would like to make a Donation to BENEVOLENT ACCOUNT FOR TYRONE LOVE, and make all checks to BENEVOLENT ACCOUNT FOR TYRONE LOVE…

This is a sad moment for all of us and as tears shed down my face typing this lets keep Tyrones name ALIVE!! and lets help find who did this! he deserves that! The Seattle Police gave me a 24 hour hotline to give leads and tips 206.684.5567 PLEASE HELP!!

  19. This crime was terrible. The people who have shot, injured and killed other black people in the CD have been caught and have elicited community outrage and demonstrations (examples are the guy who shot the owner of the Cheese Steak restaurant and the kid who was shot in the face in Judkins park). The difference in those cases was that witnesses cooperated with police. I don’t understand the idea that racism is involved here. Black people are shooting black people. White, black and asian cops, medics, and doctors at Harborview do a heroic job trying to save them. There is outrage from the greater community, but also frustration. I am outraged. I am not a racist. My kids are mixed race. We are leaving.

Thanks to all of those who are proactively raising money for his mother and a legacy at the Y. Please read Jamar’s post.

  20. Tyrone Love was one of the best, most genuinely kind-hearted people I have ever had the pleasure of knowing in my life. The fact that there was such a violent end to such a positive life is so hard to accept. Those that knew Tyrone KNEW that he was never violent, never hurtful or unkind to anyone, his message was to STOP THE VIOLENCE, yet he was gunned down only blocks from his home, in the neighborhood he was raised in.

Please read Jamar’s post and help the Love family with whatever donation possible. THIS WAS A WONDERFUL man, and why he was taken from us so long before his time we will never understand.

Please help keep Tyrones name ALIVE!! and lets help find who did this! he deserves that! The Seattle Police provided a 24 hour hotline to give leads and tips 206.684.5567 PLEASE HELP!!

  21. I am so deeply sad to see the photo of Tyrone Love and recognize him as the young man from the Meredith Matthews YMCA who I stopped in to talk with when we were considering moving into the neighborhood three years ago. He was abundantly enthusiastic, said he had grown up in Madrona, and absolutely loved this part of Seattle. Tyrone is part of the reason we chose to live here. My heart goes out to his family and friends over his senseless and tragic death.

    Subject Racial Profiling

We all need to show up!!!!

    RIP……Tyrone

  23. Are you kidding me right now? The only thing that makes any sort of sense is that you want to racially profile young black males to find the shooters?

  24. please let me know when the funeral is…Israel Hill Franklin High School C/O 2003 5034151306

  25. I want to address your suggestion to donate to the Meredith Mathews YMCA. While your intention is a good one, I would strongly recommend that you **NOT** donate to the Y under Tyrone’s name. Tyrone made a wonderful contribution to the Y. Unfortunately, he was quite unhappy with how he was treated by the organization when he left.

I worked with Tyrone a few years ago at the Y. To piggyback on many other comments on this forum, he was one of the most charismatic and upbeat people I have ever met. He always had a welcoming smile for everyone who entered the Y, and was the true heart of the place. He created a positive atmosphere for kids, members, and staff alike. Tyrone demonstrated genuine interest in helping others, treated everyone with respect and warmth, and had such wonderful sense of humor.

In 2007, Tyrone left the Y with great sadness after serving the community there for many years. As much as Tyrone loved kids and would probably have wanted donations to go toward helping kids, it is my strong opinion that the Y should not receive any financial benefit from Tyrone’s death, since he was treated so poorly by the management there before he left.

Of course, each of us will contribute in whatever way we believe is appropriate. But instead of the Y, consider donating to the benevolent account that has been set up at Bank of America. Or maybe, instead or in addition to money, think about keeping Tyrone’s legacy alive by using him as a model for how to live your life: treat others with respect, be a good listener, greet others warmly, and volunteer to help kids to stay in school and stay on the right track.

Tyrone touched so many people in his short life. The world has lost an incredible human being.

  26. Tyrone was a good guy! This is a shame!!! Again the streets took someone who was beautiful on the inside. But I know that Heaven couldn’t be anymore happier. YOU WILL BE MISSED….My condolences to his family, may faith in God keep you strong

  27. I know everyone is going through a really hard time and working hard on the events that I’m seeing posted, but I wondered if someone who knew (I hate saying knew because I wish I’d known him) Tyrone and has all the uptodate info could post an article of the upcoming gatherings, where to send contributions and even his website so people can see it.

I want to get the info to folks in the community who are on my facebook and that I know. From here to Columbia City. Thanks. Keep the faith. If you don’t have time I’ll figure it out.

  28. Now as far as the memorial services that will be announced on a later date… We are trying to raise money for the Funeral Exspenses for Tyrone we want our Vibrant Brother to go out in style, MONDAY we will be having a benefit concert at Columbia City Theater with live R & B and spoken word from seattles finest..all proceeds 100% will be gave to Tyrone Loves mother…..Also there is a Bank of America Account just created and you can go to the teller at any Bank of America after today and tell them you would like to make a Donation to BENEVOLENT ACCOUNT FOR TYRONE LOVE, and make all checks to BENEVOLENT ACCOUNT FOR TYRONE LOVE…

This is a sad moment for all of us and lets keep Tyrones name ALIVE!! and lets help find who did this! he deserves that! The Seattle Police hsve provided a 24 hour hotline to give leads and tips 206.684.5567 PLEASE HELP!! Anyone that may have any information on the Red Dodge Charger that the murderer drove away in please call and help us find justice.

  29. I’m at work literally in tears reading thru these messages. I never knew Tyrone personally, but I remember his smile from seeing him around town. Tyrone’s death has really touched me, I’m so hurt for this young man and his family. I can’t believe we live in such an evil, and cruel world, the devil is busy. I know Tyrone is in heaven smiling down, and like another person stated Heaven just got a little bit happier. But the pain his family, and friends are going thru must be unbearable. RIP Tyrone Love, you will be truly missed.

  30. …but i’ve heard people talking about him and it’s just terribly sad, for his family, friends, and this community.

I do take heart in seeing people at his makeshift memorial on Cherry St every time I’ve been passed in the last few days. Yesterday, there were 5-6 people out there in the morning and the same at night.

  31. Please come support the memory of Tyrone Love.

There is a rally at Garfield High School at 11am on Saturday

There is a benefit concert with local r and b musicians, spoken word and all donations go to Tyrone’s mom to help with the funeral costs.

There has been an account opened to help with the funeral expenses. Any little bit helps, you can go to ANY Bank of America branch and make a deposit to the BENEVOLENT ACCOUNT FOR TYRONE LOVE, and make all checks to BENEVOLENT ACCOUNT FOR TYRONE LOVE.

This is such a tragedy. Tyrone was one of the best people I have ever known.

  32. I came across an online community for individual seeking interracial love. It is ++++((((—Blackwhitemeet. C O M))))++++ All singles there are seeking interracial relationships. Interracial is not a problem here, but a great merit to cherish!

  33. Hi all
In case you were visiting a branch of Bank of America that is not in the Central District, you may have had trouble depositing money into the account.
The name is not “Benevolent Account…” it is under “Tyrone Love Estate”.

  34. man and i knew him too. stop shooting people really. so many pointless deaths. stop the beef i swear its soo dumb. worry about yourself and your money i swear. quincy coleman dying was already the stupidest thing he was 15 who shoots a 15 year old 6 times with a tech 9????? dumb ass punks i swear whoever is doing the shooting is gonna get theirs.

REST IN PEACE QUINCY AND TYRONE AND SLOANE(all since halloween…) and RIP ANYONE ELSE DYING OVER THE DUMB BEEF

  35. PLEASE don’t donate to the Meredith Matthews YMCA in Tyrone’s name. That place was NOT good to him. The management there SUCKS and Tyrone knew it. If you want to donate in his memory and help, go to your local Bank of America branch and donate to his estate. If he had better benefits from the YMCA, this young person wouldn’t need help in being buried!

The Executive Director Paula Houston should NOT see benefit from his death. He was treated poorly when he was there before leaving to pursue other career interests.

I’ve stopped giving to the Y because of how poorly they treat staff. It’s also curious that MMEM YMCA is the branch where they try to put most of the blacks that work for the Greater Seattle YMCA.
