I fear the worst when I see “Assault w/ Weapons” pop up on the 911 site. This one wasn’t as bad as most.
Here’s what we can piece together so far: An already intoxicated man went into Parnell’s to buy a beer. The clerk refused to sell it to him, and the customer reacted by plunking an insufficient amount of cash on the counter and walking out. The clerk chased after him to retrieve the beer and a scuffle began, ending with the clerk striking the customer with some sort of bat.
The customer does have visible contusions to his arms and legs.
In an interesting twist, both the customer and clerk have open warrants, so they’ll both be arrested. But it looks more serious for the clerk, as they’re talking about an assault charge for him.
BTW – On the scanner I heard that “independent media” was on the scene. Was one of our dedicated members putting together a story, or do we have some friendly competition in the neighborhood? We welcome either..
I happened to drive by sometime after this must have happened and saw 3 cop cars with their lights on, a crowd of people on a couple of the corners, and a small media crew on the scene in front of Parnells. The media crew did not appear to be from any of the identified news stations, but they did have a pretty significant camera on a tripod that looked worthy of a news organization with at least 3 people that appeared to be associated with the camera.
There was an incident at 21st/John last night (“Assault with weapon, 7 per rule”).
An unmarked white TV truck (big dish on top) appeared: one guy with a tripod. He (and SPD) soon left. False alarm?
20xx E. John – 9:04pm – “Caller says that her mother has been shot in front of her residence.” A bunch of units responded. “She believes that her mother was shot by her neighbor, and she believes that the neighbor was trying to get into her mother’s apartment. The mother is out in front of the building.”
A lot of police responded – at least 7 different units – and they arrived quickly. Operators tried to call back the complainant but someone kept hanging up on them. Police didn’t immediately find a victim in front of the building where the caller originally reported, but made contact with someone in the mother’s apartment.
Officer: “We’re getting some information that this may not be a real call. Keep looking, but we’re getting indication that the complainant may have some mental issues.”
Officer: “There’s some indication that the complainant said she was shot when it was only her car that was shot.”
Operator: “Should we send fire back to the barn?”
Officer: “Affirmative”
Officer: “It appears that this is an unfounded call.”
Officer: “We searched her car and found that there’s nothing wrong with it.”
Hopefully someone can get a copy the video and use it in a court case to abate this long standing vile place.
