Check out this great blog post by former CD resident Cliffe, featuring vintage photos of the old Dilettante building at 23rd and Cherry.
The first photo from the 30s shows a little neighborhood grocery that opens onto the street to display their fresh produce. How great would it be to have a place like that (not a convenience store) in the neighborhood again?
Also notice the trolley tracks on 23rd and on Cherry in the 30s photo, but completely gone in the 1944 version. One wonders if the lack of trolleys had any connection to the lack of grocery at that later date.
I think there’s a few things I’d like to put in a time machine from the 30s and zap it forward to 2008….
Update: I just found some more pictures of this area on a site put together by Ron at Central Space:

i would LOVE a real little grocers on that corner – especially since it’s right by my house!
