The Neighbor Lady is open at 23rd and Union

The Neighbor Lady is now open for business, joining Med Mix in breathing new activity in the troubled corner at 23rd and Union.

Owners Stephan Mollmann and Shira Bray — both from Cherry Street’s Twilight Exit, a CDNews advertiser — have been hard at work rehabbing the space that housed Thompson’s Point of View for decades. Thompson’s had a couple difficult years and eventually closed in September due to back taxes.

The Neighbor Lady opened its doors for the first time Sunday evening for a “soft opening.” Now, it is up and running at normal hours (4 p.m. until bar close every day), though it’s possible they will have some late openings for the first week or so.

The bar is themed after several European bars Mollmann visited years ago, and the name comes from a brothel-themed neighborhood bar in Amsterdam. The menu has sultry language (appetizers are labeled “foreplay”), and Mollmann says the joint is still working out its identity.

While the menu is not exclusively vegetarian, it is definitely vegetarian-friendly. The bar also features a games room with pinball machines and video games as well as a pool table.

You can follow The Neighbor Lady on Facebook to stay updated on daily specials.

  1. Swung in for a cold one last night. Fantastic job remodeling this great looking building. This bar is going to be a neighborhood gathering place for a long time!

CDN – Time to move past the constant messaging of a “troubled” intersection. That is old news.

  2. We’ve loved the Twilight through all its incarnations. Welcome, Neighbor Lady! We were in on Sunday for some drinks, Medieval Madness, QBert and Vegetarian Poutine. Yum to all of it. We will be back!

  3. whats on tap? Who cares about the vegetarian food – this is a bar right???

  4. Leschi – I was there sipping a beer too! :-D

I also cringe a bit when I see the “troubled corner” stuff!

However, after thinking about it, I think it’s important that CD News points out that context. That is, Med Mix and The Neighbor Lady opening up on that corner is a *much* bigger deal than if they opened up on a corner that’s had much more success in the retail space. The residents here have been waiting for this kind of growth, foot traffic, stabilizing businesses, and eyes on the street for a while. That finally happening is a huge part of the story. :-)

  5. 2 IPAs on tap- I had a lovely Ninkasi. Ok, two Ninkasis. And, just so you know- the veggie reuben w/ field roast was good too! Great feel to the Neighbor Lady- comfortable, open, and I love looking out on Union.

  6. Alas 21+ only at The Neighbor Lady. Our Sister bar The Twilight Exit on Cherry St. does allow kids till around 6ish.
