12th Avenue Stewards

Regular monthly meeting of 12th Avenue Stewards, the neighborhood group for all 12th Avenue stakeholders.  The meeting features a discussion with representatives of King County regarding the process for public involvement in planning the development of the County Youth Services site — more than seven acres between 12th and 14th, Remington Ct. and Alder St.  All are welcome at the meeting to discuss this, also the new 12th Avenue Park, and other important neighborhood topics.

Central Area Community Development Coalition Meeting

On January 16th, the Central Area Community Development Coalition (CACDC) held its founding meeting at the Greater Mount Baker Baptist Church on 25th and Jackson. Hosted by the United Black Clergy and various other community organizations.  Fifty-five residents, business owners, clergy members, city planners, and community organizers attended, all with a vested interested in the future of the Central Area.

The coalition supports transparent and community–controlled development in the Central Area by providing an open forum where anyone can come to share what they know, and get involved in existing development projects or campaigns. The CACDC’s goals include: preserving the existing culture and economic character of the community; supporting good jobs with living wages; and protecting existing local businesses and residents from raised rent, economic hardship, and unwelcome zoning changes.

Pastor Kenneth J. Ransfer of Greater Mount Baker opened the meeting with a welcome and introduction to the goals and values statement of CACDC. Members of the community reported briefly on three current development opportunities: Fire Station 6, Promenade 23, and Judkins Park. Following Q&A, everyone was invited to join a breakout group for more in-depth conversations around those three issues, and a fourth table provided an opportunity for attendees to address other concerns. The conversations were rich and engaging. Many lingered after the meeting to connect with one another. Even if you missed the first meeting, you are welcome to join your neighbors at this month’s meeting. The steering committee is exploring later meeting times beginning in March to better meet the needs of local business owners and workers who cannot come at 4:00 p.m. Continue reading

Kay Smith-Blum listens at November 2012 meeting.

This Saturday’s informal drop in community meeting hosted by School Board Member Kay Smith-Blum presents an excellent opportunity to address the many remaining issues around local student assignments at both the elementary and middle school levels.  Since the levy election will be over, this is will be the time that the District will begin serious discussions around the assignment areas and capacity management, along with the design of Meany as a middle school. What are the capacity issues in the Central Area?  What is it that the community wants in  middle schools?  How will the assignment areas for Meany and Washington be determined? The Central District will be profoundly affected by the decisions made on these issues. Continue reading
