Medical marijuana co-op moving in at 24th and Madison

Tacoma Cross, a medical marijuana co-op, is preparing to open its first Seattle dispensary at 24th and Madison in the next couple weeks. The co-op has already been making deliveries from the location since they received their license three months ago.

CHS learned about the shop when the BottleNeck Lounge tweeted about the dispensary opening “right on top of us.” Will, an upper manager at Tacoma Cross, said the co-op tries to be a good neighbor.

“We try not to impact the area around us except in a positive way,” he said. The co-op does not produce any of the medicine, clothing, glass or other products themselves, instead sourcing what they can from people in the Tacoma area. The co-op also teaches classes for people who want to grow their own marijuana.

Eight people connected to Tacoma Cross were charged with felonies last year after seven of their homes were raided. In the end, five people pleaded guilty to lesser misdemeanor charges and were let off without suspended or deferred jail sentences.

“After a year in court, we finally beat it,” said Will. He noted that the dispensary was never raided, only the homes of those connected with Tacoma Cross.

Until the shop opens fully, people can become members of the co-op by visiting the Tacoma location, which has been open since 2009. Here’s a video giving a tour of the Tacoma space and its amenities:

  1. I’d worry, as a neighbor, that people will try to rob this place frequently. Also, where are the customers supposed to park (before getting back in their cars, totally baked, man, to weave down Madison)?

  2. They’ll probably park in the same place the bar patrons do before they weave down Madison.

  3. So you’re not worried about where the bottleneck patrons are going to park (before getting back in their cars, totally sloshed, man, to weave down Madison)? Your bias is showing.

  4. We should start a betting pool on this one. I bet we hear of an armed robbery w/in two months.

  5. Customers will mostly be simply getting their product at the dispensary, and doing their toking at home. Their Tacoma location doesn’t have a smoking room onsite, I assume this one won’t either. At The Bottleneck, on the other hand, you couldn’t take your purchases home if you wanted to.

Besides, this location is very well served by transit; it’s a crossroads of several frequent bus routes. Parking is very much optional.

  6. I’d take that bet. Most of the previous dispensary robberies have been at out-of-sight locations tucked in the backs of industrial parks. Game Medical and Purple Cross were the exception, not the rule.

A busy, heavily trafficked location like this should have enough eyes on the street to keep it safe.

  7. RE: safety?

No bias. If the post had been about a bar, I might have commented about a bar. Is your pot intake impacting your ability to focus?
