Led by point guard Tony Wroten, Jr., the Garfield boys basketball team defeated Kentwood 78-48 in the first round of the state tournament last night.
Wroten scored 29 points Friday night, including four three-pointers, as Garfield rolled over Kentwood, 78-48, to move on to the Class 4A state quarterfinals in the Tacoma Dome.
Although the game was considered a state-tournament game under the new state format, it was played at Juanita High School.
It was the same gym where Garfield’s season ended in the district tournament last year during a season that Wroten missed because of a knee injury.
With their leader, the state’s most dynamic player back, the Bulldogs (22-3) have been ranked No. 1 all season and now are three victories away from their ultimate goal.
