Hearing today on MLK school options

The Seattle school district’s long process to decide what to do with the closed MLK elementary school building takes another step forward today, as a committee will present their analysis of the four revised proposals to the school board.

The analysis will help the school board make a future decision between the four contenders for the property:

  • The Bush School, which wants to tear down the old MLK school buildings and use the property for sports fields
  • CCC@MLK, the group of Madison Valley residents that would like to re-purpose the school buildings as a community center
  • CADA, which plans to build a smaller community center focusing on education and art programs for youth
  • First AME Church, which wants to use the existing buildings to support and expand their programs, serving families, youth activities, day care, and veterans.

The hearing today starts at 3:30pm at school district headquarters, 2445 3rd Avenue South. It’s not clear if community members will be allowed to comment on the proceedings, but groups like CCC@MLK are encouraging a big turnout to show community support for their proposals.

  1. This is the first item on the agenda of the Seattle School Board’s Audit & Finance Committee Meting agenda. The public does not comment during committee meetings.
