Follow-up on Halloween Shooting

I just spoke with SPD’s Officer Mark Jamieson and Spokesperson Renee Witt about the shooting that happened on the edge of the Garfield campus on Halloween, killing one kid.   They described the investigation as “ongoing and active”, with detectives from homicide and the gang unit working together to follow up on leads in the case.

Ms. Witt said that there were witnesses to the shooting, but said that their cooperation could be characterized as “a mixed bag”, with the younger people being less helpful that others.

This morning the SPD blog contained an entry about a south precinct shooting that occurred late last night.  Although no one was injured in that incident, the blog said that:

A car that matched the description of one used in an earlier shooting was parked outside the house [that was shot at].  Officers located the owner, got a consent to search the car, and found a gun and drugs in the trunk.

Ms. Witt confirmed that the vehicle was thought to be involved in a previous shooting somewhere in the east precinct, but couldn’t provide any specifics without potentially compromising that investigation.

The name of the kid that was killed on Friday is not yet available, but is expected to be released by the end of the day.  We’ll let you know once it is.

  1. Thanks for your website, if it wasn’t for this site, the neighbors would have little answers to dangerous situations.

  2. The blog says the shooting occurred in the 5400 block of 23rd S., and the car was found outside there.
