CD Scanner – 5/7

  1. I saw those three at about 4:15, same place. They were sort of blocking the path, but not being aggressive about it–just like kids out walking around. If you travel through there, have a phone handy, and keep your speed up.

  2. The three kids were standing at the west entrance to the bike tunnel. That’s not the first time there’s been trouble at that spot–please be careful.

  3. Defend your self. If they try it again and end up dead for threatening your life words gets out and others may not try it. I have never heard of it being this bad around here!

  4. bernard goetz.

i do have my lock on me and would not hesitate to use it if something like this happened to me.

  5. I’ve always been reassured that the tunnel has been so peaceful. It’s potentially a big problem. Aren’t there cameras in there?

To keep things in perspective: we’re talking about 3 kids. I think the community can figure out how to handle 3 kids (and not the goetz way).

OK, so here’s an idea (this came to mind when the break-ins were being discussed earlier this week): what about flyers? Posting flyers around the neighborhood that say something like:
“A BICYCLIST WAS ASSAULTED AND ROBBED IN THE TUNNEL ON 5/7/08. SUSPECTS WERE 3 BLACK MALES AGE 16-17, [ANY FURTHER DESCRIPTION HERE], WHO HAVE BEEN SEEN LOITERING AROUND THE WEST ENTRANCE TO THE TUNNEL. IF YOU SEE THEM, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY. NOT IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!” (maybe add: read and post at http://www.centraldistrictnews.com, your online community)
    or
“SEVERAL HOUSES ON [XXX] BLOCKS WERE BURGLARIZED ON [DATE/TIME]. [SUSPECT DESCRIPTIONS] WERE SEEN LOITERING IN THE AREA. [SOMETHING ABOUT THEIR M.O.]. IF YOU SEE SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY, CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY. NOT IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD!”

Dorky, I know, but I think these kids (and the burglars) would think twice if they knew people were on to them. Who knows, maybe their parents would see the flyers and take action. If only the info on this blog were available to more people in the community, I think these kids (and others) would feel less anonymous. (We all know how quickly the info about the break-ins spread once it showed up on this blog. I sent the link to everyone I knew in the area.) The CD would feel like the small town it really is.

  6. There are cameras in the tunnel. Police inquired about them yesterday, but it was after hours and they couldn’t get a copy at the time. I’m assuming that detectives will be following up today.

  7. OK OK I was not suggesting Bernards screw driver approach, but when your life is threatened you can not just take it passivly. There IS an emergency phone just outside the tunnel. Does it still work? Why are there not phones along the whole route.
I’ll say it again, containment zone, we live in one.
