Arcaro Boxing Gym to open at the Jefferson aparments




The Central District will soon have another boxing gym. Arcaro Boxing Gym signed a lease for a street-level space at the Jefferson apartment building on 12th Avenue and E. Jefferson Street. Arcaro will offer training and coaching for non-competitive, amateur, and professional boxers.

Gym owner Tricia Arcaro Turton is a Central District resident and has coached boxers since 2004. She is currently working with Olympic hopeful Jen Hamann, who is a 2013 Continental Champion and 2013 USA Boxing National Champion.

“Arcaro Boxing will be a place where boxers can develop skills to succeed in the gym, at school, at work and home,” Turton said in a press release. “We look forward to a long relationship there with Capitol Hill Housing and the community.”

The boxing gym will cover 1,250 square feet and is hoping for an August open date.… Continue reading…

Arcaro Boxing profiles Kismet Salon

Arcaro Boxing, which is training Olympic hopeful Jen Hamann, has started a series of profiles of local sponsors. Recently, they profiled Kismet Salon at 34th and Spring in Madrona:

1.  What prompted you to start your own business?




I started Kismet Salon after I adopted my eldest daughter and was pregnant with my second. I needed a place to work when I came back from maternity leave.  I thought owning my own business would provide me a stable place to work and flexibility I would need with two small children.  I think I probably had always thought about owning my own place when the timing and need coincided.  One could say destiny or fate, I might just say Kismet.

Queen Underwood and Jen Hamann win national boxing gold

Two women boxers with former ties to Cappy’s Boxing Gym at 21st and Union took home the gold at the USA boxing championships over the weekend.

Jen Hamann is a rising star who has has been training with Arcaro Boxing (see this post describing their tough work together leading up to the championships). She brings home the featherweight gold.

Garfield grad Queen Underwood, who fought in the 2012 Olympics, continued her success in the ring, bringing home the lightweight gold.

The featherweight division had the most competitors in the women’s field and the two females left standing on Saturday faced off in the final round bout. Jennifer Hamann (Seattle, Wash.) and Rianna Rios (Alice, Texas) boxed for gold in the fifth bout of evening competition.
