Reminder EastPAC meeting is this Thursday.

We hope to see a large turnout for the Thursday, March 22nd EastPAC community meeting! By popular demand, we are now starting at 6:30!

The 911 Communications Center Commander, Captain Sean O’Donnell, will be our featured guest at this month. We have a special regard for Captain O’Donnell, as he recently served as our East Precinct Operations Lieutenant, attending our meetings and responding to your community concerns.  We welcome his ‘homecoming’ to the East Precinct!

Captain O’Donnell is ready to listen to your concerns when calling 911. Here is your chance to directly impact how the 911 operators communicate with you. It is important that you continue to report crimes to 911; this is how SPD basically determines emphasis patrols.  We will also ask him to explain how to be a good witness, what to specifically describe when reporting a crime.

There will also be time for your concerns, East Precinct Command staff, as usual, will be present to hear you.

Our meetings are regularly held at Seattle University’s Chardin Hall, a very accessible and convenient location off of 11th and East Jefferson with free parking directly in front of the building.

Mark your calendars:

Central Area/Mt. Baker Open House: Proposed Sept. 2012 Service Changes
WhenMon, February 27, 6pm – 8pm
WhereWashington Middle School, 2101 S Jackson St, Seattle, Washington 98144
From King County Councilmember  Larry Gossett: Metro is already soliciting public comment on the second service adjustments that are intended to go into effect in September. The current proposal is available on Metro’s Have a Say website, click here. During this round of service adjustments, the District 2 buses that are most impacted are in the Central Area (Routes 2, 3, 4, 14, and 27). Metro is hosting an Open House on February 27th at Washington Middle School from 6 pm – 8 pm. I will be there and I hope you will join me to learn more about the proposed bus changes and what they mean to District 2 residents. I want to hear from you, so please email me at [email protected]

Further commentary
Even though there seems to be good news for now, Metro has been quiet on the details of the promise not to change the #2 and they will not be represented on the web page until sometime later in March.   Try to attend to let Metro hear your comments.  Queen Ann (not just Seattle Center) and the #2 with its connection to the #13 represent  important connections between housing along Seneca and the Queen Anne Community Center.   Let Metro know not to begin chopping away at the route.  There are many subtle relationships that need to be openly discussed in collaboration with the community.

Good News from Metro for Now

Dear Bus 2 Riders:
In case you have not seen it, below is the email announcement from Metro about the current status of Routes #2, #4, and #27 for this round of restructuring.Thank you for your help in communicating our collective comcerns to Metro.

We anticipate there will be furthur considerations of changes/modifications at some point in the future. Let us know if you don’t want to be notified by Bus2Riders when we learn Metro is taking up this issue again. We will keep this email active and send out a notification to the list when we hear that there are new issues or opportunities for comment regarding route #2.  If you aren’t already on the list and want to you can still email [email protected] to be included on the list.

If you haven’t expressed your concerns to Metro, it wouldn’t hurt to send them in before Feb 29 at [email protected] and/or fill out their questionnairehttp://www.surveymk.com/s/Sept2012TransitRestructuringP2, so Metro has a more complete understanding of riders’ concerns. You can also attend one of the remaining Open Houses to learn more. This is the link to the calendarhttp://metro.kingcounty.gov/have-a-say/calendar.html.

Also it would be appropriate to express your thanks to Metro for listening to the community’s concerns and for removing the changes to the #2 for now.

Thank you again for your participation.

Subject: Route 2 Update
Thank you for taking the time to participate in our outreach process for the September 2012 service change – your input has been very valuable.
We undertake our outreach efforts to develop a better understanding of how the community uses our services, so that the changes we propose balance the needs of riders of a particular route with the needs of current and future riders of our entire system.
The proposals Metro presented for feedback were designed to improve the efficiency of our service to serve more people to more places. Talking with you and others helps us understand how existing service is an important part of your lives and neighborhoods. When proposals include long established high ridership routes within a diverse and multifaceted setting, public outreach helps Metro weigh technical considerations with human factors.
We have received valuable feedback. We’ve heard that there are factors that deserve further review, analysis and understanding. As a result, Metro has decided to postpone the route 2, 4 and 27 proposals. Issues were raised of coverage and traffic congestion on Madison Street, and more information about the unique travel needs of those that live and work in the area is needed. For now, we are not proposing to change existing routing of this set of routes. Instead, we are proposing to just make small adjustments to the frequency and running hours of routes 4 and 27 consistent with demand.
You can expect to see updated web content and materials detailing a recommended proposal in mid-March. You can send us comments by email at [email protected], or phone our message line at 206-263-9768.
Sincerely,

Manager, Service Development

Truly Metro is Listening.!3{2}Our work for the #2 is not done.

The communities that have been working to save the #2 have a sense that Metro is listening  and  hope that this will lead to no proposed changes to the route.  Each connection is discretely related to another.  As a group we fully support the goals of our amazing group to keep the pressure on Metro to get the QA connections right.
As it is, the #2 is a productive route.  It would be great if at the Seattle City Council on Tuesday, Feb 21 Metro can tell all concerned that the Route #2 (and #13) changes are off the table.  Metro should  look into efficiency improvements for the existing Route #2.  It truly is a great route and an important crosstown bus.
Reasons to look at how to improve and not cut the #2 bus route:
1. Recent Seattle DOT traffic counts on Madison vs. Seneca show that Madison has three times  the number of vehicles every day, as compared to Seneca — and these numbers are before the addition of more buses to Madison as proposed.

2. Madison is a designated already corridor for all emergency vehicle access, and many patient are dropped-off at clinics along the street, making it diffcult for a bus only lane.

3. Metro has heard from many bus #2 riders about how moving the route off Seneca, stopping at 1st Avenue, and cutting Route #2  through downtown bus service to Seattle Center and Queen Anne — without transfers — will disrupt and negatively impact their lives. What will it take for Metro to take changes to the #2 (& #13 which it connects with to reach the Queen Anne Community Center and Seattle Pacific University) off the table?
4. If it’s not broken, why ‘fix’ it?

37th District Legislators Town Hall, this Saturday – Update: Not happening

It is time to meet with your representatives in Olympia.  These people represent you.

First Hill and Metro meeting tonight change of location

CD residents who are concerned about some the proposed changes should consider attending this meeting.  There are intrinsic relationships between First Hill and the CD transit routes.  Decisions regarding one area will affect the other.

First Hill Improvement Association:

Volney Richmond auditorium is in the Lindeman Pavilion on Level 1.  The street address is 1201 Terry Avenue.  You enter the building on the second floor, due to the hill, and take the elevator or stairs down to the first floor.  There is parking in the garage in this building also. (Unfortunately, it is not free.) Here is a link to the campus map and instructions:
