The Pacific NW Black Community Festival is being described as a rebirth of a community tradition that began 50 years ago, and it's all happening this weekend at Sam Smith Park and Jimi Hendrix Park on top of the I-90 lid.
They're planning food, entertainment, vendors, and youth activities from noon to 9pm today, Saturday (8/14) and Sunday.
Plus on Sunday you can enjoy the third parade of the year, with the Mardi Gras Parade running down MLK from Powell Barnett Park at Jefferson down to the NW African American Museum on S. Massachusetts. That starts at 1pm.
Sam Smith park is located next to the museum at 2300 S. Massachusetts.
So far this year we've seen Metro remove and consolidate bus stops on routes 3, 4, and 8. Each time the goal has been to increase the average space between stops up to 950 feet, with a stated goal of increasing route performance and decreasing operating costs.
Next up is route #14, which is scheduled to lose 18 stops in the Central District and Mount Baker starting on September 4th.
Here's the specifics:
The route will also gain one Eastbound stop at MLK & Jackson.
If you have objections or alternate suggestions for any of those changes, you can leave your comment with Metro.
The first band is getting set up on the Soul of the City stage, which a the north end of the park.
Umojafest has a big line-up of music both today and Sunday, spread across two separate stages at Judkins Park. It all gets started Saturday at around 2pm, after the end of the parade.
Here's the Saturday line-up for the Soul of the City stage:

- Team Avengers
- Foster Enterprise presents Lady Tasz & JS Smoove
- RC Trakaholic Full Circle Showcase

And here's what's happening on the Hip-Hop Stage:

Stay tuned for more on the musical acts and parades later in the day.
We've received two separate reports of the urban deer visiting block parties in the Leschi area last night. Commenter Mary Alyce saw them at Irving & Yakima, and reader Brenda emailed us about seeing them enter Sam Smith park above I-90 last night as well.
Evidently they headed west from there, following the park along I-90. We heard the scanner broadcast a few minutes ago about a deer spotting at Rainier & Charles. We went down to investigate, and found a small crowd watching them in the industrial area to the west of Rainier.
We found the two small deer simultaneously grazing, panting, and cowering inside a small area that is surrounded by 6' high chain link fence. Deer can jump upwards of 12 feet high, so they're probably not trapped. But I-90 is directly behind them, and onlookers were worried about them suddenly darting onto the freeway.
Another member of the crowd was concerned about them getting water, given the heat and their panting, and there was talk of bringing over a big bucket of water to get them hydrated.
A police officer was also on hand, but he said that the city's policy is very hands-off when it comes to wildlife, even for deer that. Emailer Brenda says she contacted the wildlife department this morning, saying "their advice to everyone is to not approach or try to interfere. Just let them go wherever there going".
Update: We just realized that neither of these deer are the same as the one spotted by kiacharon last month, as that was a buck with a growing rack of antlers, while these are antlerless lady deer.
Anyone know what the helicopters, police activity was in this neck of the woods last night? There were helicopters, a fire truck and police cars. Looking forward to the scanner for more information.
We've seen sports, festivals, concerts, marches, and water spray play in Judkins park, the neighborhood's largest. Now we can add a new summer park activity: theater.
The regional GreenStage theater company is bringing their productions of Shakespeare to the neighborhood on Friday and Sunday nights:
- Friday 7/16, 7pm - Romeo and Juliet
- Sunday 7/18, 7pm
3pm- As You Like It
The shows are free, but donations are accepted.
Judkins park is at 2150 S. Norman. Parking is available at the bottom of the park at 22nd & S. Judkins.
Green Stages Shakespeare in the Park will have two performances in Judkins Park on Friday July 16th and Sunday July 18th at 7 pm. Bring a balnket, food and whatever and enjoy a summer night performance of the Bard. The stage is mid park near the Corner of S. Charles Street and the Park
We got a tweet from a CDNews reader this morning about a gruesome situation she's found around her home near Judkin's Park: dead, uninjured squirrels.
So far she's found them in her yard and a neighbor's yard, and she suspects that someone is poisoning them.
She's contacting animal control today to bring it to their attention. If you've seen any other cases in the area that would make this a trend, you can reach animal control at 206-386-7387.
As for our tipster, she hopes it doesn't go any further: "Hope we find the cause. If my neighbors see me digging holes in the backyard at 1am again, they'll probably call the cops :)"
You may have seen in this morning's scanner report where a big truck was blocking lanes of 23rd after getting stuck on the crest of the hill coming up from Charles.
Turns out it was a moving truck, and it's really stuck. And it looks like the owners of the stuff being moved were in the cab of the truck, looking none-too-pleased.
Here's a few snapshots of the snafu:
Hopefully no ones valuables were sitting in that undercarriage storage area.
They're waiting on "the biggest two truck they can get" to pull it free. Expect traffic backups as those two southbound lanes of 23rd remain blocked for the next hour or so.
We live on 25th and Mass, just south of the CD and north of the Rainier Valley right by the African American museum. Our home was broken into Friday at lunch time. They kicked in the front door and entered while the alarm was blaring. They stole electronics, a laptop, jewelery and my brief case. Today (Sunday) we just spotted a person brazenly walking by our house with my briefcase slung over his shoulder. He ran when he saw me, so the picture is not good, but I will post it if that's possible on this site.
We got a note today from Metro that announces a new program of stop consolidation for the #3 & #4 bus routes, eliminating 12 stops here in the Central District.
Metro says the changes will improve service times and reduce operating costs on the routes.
The following stops would be cut under the plan:
- 26th S. & S. Judkins (northbound)
- (northbound)
- (northbound & southbound)
- (eastbound)
- (southbound)
- (eastbound)
- (westbound)
- (westbound)
- (eastbound)
- (eastbound)
- (westbound)
If there's one of those that you can't do without, you've got until June 11th to leave a comment. You can do it online at Metro's site at http://metro.kingcounty.gov/up/sc/plans/2010/053010-03-04.ht
A large number of police officers raced to the scene of 24th & Dearborn tonight after a cell phone caller to 911 reported a man had been shot and was down on the ground. According to radio reports, the caller told dispatchers "A dude has just been shot in the head."
Police arrived within minutes but have so far not found a victim.
GPS coordinates placed the phone somewhere in the 700 block of 24th Ave South at the time of the call.
Update: No victim has been found after a big search. There was only a single call, and police now consider it to be a false report.
Police were just racing southbound on 23rd towards multiple reports of shots fired near Judkins Park.
So far there are no reports of injuries or property damage.
One caller in the 2000 block of Ingersol Place thought that the shooting occurred right outside her door.
Three juveniles were seen running away from the park, and a dark-colored van was seen leaving westbound from the area.
Are those flying around I-90 traffic reporters or is this related to the attempted robbery at the Bank of America by the Red Apple?
Those are really annoying!
There's two meeting on our calendar tonight that you might want to check out:
- Jimi Hendrix Park Open House - 7pm - Learn more and get involved in the plans to build Jimi Hendrix Park next to the NW African American Museum. Note that CHS has reported that the Jimi Hendrix statue on Broadway might find a new home in the park.
- East Precinct Crime Prevention Coalition - Share and tell your crime concerns with East Precinct police leadership. New City Attorney Pete Holmes will also be in attendance.
We're planning on hitting the Park meeting and letting CHS cover the EPCPC. Let us know if we miss anything exciting.
Hi Neighbors,
We're missing a Siamese cat from the 24th Ave S and S Lane area.
This cat (Ginger) was a stray we adopted from the SCCC wood working school on 24th S and S Lane.
She was last seen late evening Monday, October 20th.
We're worried. If you see her, please call or email Christina at
206.307.4345
Thanks,
Christina
This afternoon, the neighbors down in the southern end of the CD completed their first community harvest.
We picked two Italian plum trees (one donated by a neighbor and one on a lot being converted to townhomes). We gathered approximately 100 pounds of fruit, which then was offered to the harvesters and neighbors in the Colman. About 70 pounds of fresh fruit will go tomorrow morning to the Rainier Valley Food Bank.
We're planning on another harvest this weekend and anticipate several more harvests as we move from plum to the pears and apples in our old neighborhood.
If you live within the Colman sub-neighborhood (Jackson to the Lid, 23rd to MLK) and are interested in either donating your unused fruit, helping with the harvest, or doing workshops on canning and preserving the harvest, please contact Knox at knoxg98111@gmail.com directly.
For our other neighbors in the CD who are interested in Community Harvesting, please contact either the Seattle Tilth to donate your tree at 633-0451 or City Fruit to learn more about urban fruit and gleaning initiatives in the city.
Last night's second Teahouse Concert was a mellow evening with a surprising sun break for a perfect way to end the weekend. Greta Matassa, her band and Susan Pascal on vibes played a couple sets with songs from her many albums including some tunes by Henry Mancini, Ray Charles and ending with a few tunes by Blossom Dearie.
The final Teahouse Concert will be Sunday, August 23 with Jovino Santo Netos Quintet playing an evening of Brazilian Jazz.
The Teahouse Concerts take place in Judkins Park at 939 25th Avenue South, 98144

Here are a few pictures from this evening's Teahouse Concert featuring Tangabrazo playing some great old and new tangos and Jaimes Friedgen and Christa Rodriguez doing some dance demonstrations and teaching the neighbors some sweltering tango steps.
This is a very special and intimate venue to see some of Seattle's top jazz acts, so you definitely won't want to miss Greta Matassa's Trio and Susan Pascal tomorrow night.
Tomorrow's show start at 5:00 with $10 suggested donation.

A reminder that we kick off Teahouse Concerts 2009 this weekend with two terrific events.
Saturday is a garden tango party with Tangabrazo and dancers Jaimes Friedgen and Christa Rodriquez. We have a stage large enough for outdoor dancing. You can watch, listen and dance!
Sunday, jazz vocalist Greta Matassa performs with her trio and guest Susan Pascal on vibes. You won't want to miss it.
As for the weather, it may be cool but we'll be hot! Bring a blanket to sit on and a make a picnic out of it with your neighbors in Judkins Park.
Shows start at 5:00: $15 & $10 suggested donation.
