Details from EastPAC:
Happy 2013 to our East Precinct neighbors!
As we begin a new year, EastPAC is experiencing some new beginnings! One of our longtime board members, Carolyn Walden, is retiring from service to us. Carolyn contributed a great deal to EastPAC; she is the one you saw consistently at the sign-in tables for our special events. She exhibited impressive tenacity in getting resolution to public safety and quality of life issues. Another of Carolyn’s special talents was to spot typos and grammatical errors in our communications when no one else on the board noticed! Carolyn promises to continue attending our meetings when she can and continues to be a delegate for the Safe Communities program.
We are also welcoming three new board members: Vickie Beach, formerly of the 12th and East Jefferson community and now a Capitol Hill resident; Melissa Glass, who resides in the Cherry Street neighborhood and is talented in communications, marketing and strategic planning; and Jerry Evergreen, a Colman Neighborhood resident, who brings a wealth of knowledge of social services, counseling and mental health experience.
Please join us at our January 24th Community Meeting as we honor and celebrate Carolyn for her service and her well-deserved retirement and welcoming our outstanding new members!
Also on the agenda is Sgt Joe Fountain, who will give an overview of the SPD Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) and the 40-hour training given to officers. This is a critical focus, as mental health issues are increasingly prevalent among those engaged in criminal activity.
We will also feature a representative from the Robbery Unit, who will discuss street robberies and how to prevent this from happening to you.
There will be a lot of important information available at the meeting, so please plan to attend! Let’s all engage in proactive efforts and preventative measures to keep our communities safe!

See you all there!
CDNews loves Carolyn! She spots our typos, too :-)
Can’t make the meeting due to a previous obligation, but could someone PLEASE ask SPD why they don’t have foot and bike patrols? The CD, Minor, Capitol Hill are all hugely pedestrian oriented, and the bulk of the crime around here seems to reflect that, but you only see officers in cruisers, and never hoofing it like the rest of us. Perhaps if they were on the sidewalk more often, sidewalk muggings would happen less frequently.
Though you can’t make our meeting tonight, there’s another opportunity for input tomorrow night – see just-posted story about meeting at Centerstone tomorrow night.
