  1. I can’t believe how late the police showed up… At that rate the whole neighborhood could’ve been massacred

  2. Unknown, eh? Well, I don’t know the perpetrators or the victim, I am not a witness to the incident, but the parties involved are the entire gang of dope dealers, look-outs, hookers, and hangers-on that make Parnell’s the place it is, i.e., an open air drug mart. The SPD which has been unable or unwilling to clean up Partnell’s or the Dearborn corridor, or any of the other dark places in the n’hood – King and MLK anyone? The owners and operators of said establishment.

I’ve been living in proximity to 24th and Dearborn for 25 years, I can’t remember when there hasn’t been a problem. I’m sick of community meetings addressing the problem. I’m tired of police officers and liaisons nodding their heads and making clucking sounds. I’m incensed with the city attorney’s office claiming that nothing serious has been happening.

The shooting was inevitable. It’s a perfect wonder it’s taken so long to happen. What the city response will be is anyone’s guess, but my guess is – not much. I hope I’m wrong.

  3. Awe C’mon…seriously, can we hold a small business owner accountable for what happens in the street? If it was a McDonalds or even Ezell’s nobody would be having hissy….SPD should be held accountable? Hmmmm?

  4. I here you Richard. “The City” can’t do anything about it. The problem is the people living there don’t care and won’t do anything about it. Sure, you care, and maybe a couple others. Some will give lip service like they care, when you talk to them. But they don’t.

Direct action by a core group of residents is required. That means risk. If somebody doesn’t take a stand, draw the line around their block. Nothing will happen.

Parnell’s needs to be shut down. All the derelict vehicles need to be towed. All the bushes need to be cut back from the sidewalks and alleys. People need to walk Dearborn, Jackson, 26th street, 25th, and 24th. 26th between Jackson and Dearborn is silly with thugs all the time. The Parnell’s croud has been lighter, but, continues to take over a side of the park. They don’t budge when I come through, even when I spend time. These guys own those blocks. It will take violence to move them out.

  5. Yes, we can hold them responsible. They don’t care. That is enough. Also, the church across 23rd doesn’t care. We don’t need and don’t want valueless goobers choking our neighborhood. Let’s tell Parnells to go away. Sell it and put up a town house with owners that care.

  6. This n’hood has been involved with Parnell’s and the police for years. The only reason Parnell’s can’t sell fortified wines, etc, is because the n’hood did the hard work of gathering evidence and organizing to make it happen. The church across the street does care. We’ve held meetings there, but if the SPD can’t or won’t act the result is n’hood frustration and a continuance of criminal activity. Direct action is probably necessary but it has to be focused on the mayor’s office, not on the street. And advocating violence in any form is irresponsible and wrong.

Kimba, the brigands hang around Parnell’s because the store caters to their needs. They aren’t selling Big Macs and boxes of chicken. Cigarettes, booze, cheap food, and a parking lot that makes a great contact point. Parnell’s is responsible.

  7. Grumbo: Shiloh Baptist Church is working with the Colman Neighborhood to come up with a solution to this problem. They’ve been hosting meetings to try to problem solve, including ones where SPD and the City Attorney’s Office are there. Their members are freaked out coming to choir practice. In a place where lots of the churches are MIA on actual neighborhood issues, Shiloh is a good neighbor.

Kimba123: Parnell’s is the problem and I don’t think they even remotely care if drug dealing and whoring is happening on their property or not, but it’s not the only problem.

Another problem is that people duck down into the crappy cul-de-Sac to conduct their business.

We can’t get a way to fix that stupid cul-de-sac because not only is there no money according to Mayor McGinn on his walk through and recent CD Meeting, but because we also have to get SDOT (who’s job is the actual street) the Parks Department (who manages the playfield) and the School District (who actually owns it) to work together to solve it. NICE! LIKE THAT IS EVER GOING TO HAPPEN! This despite SPD trying to get sight lines fixed there and Seattle Neighborhood Group doing a CEPTED and emailing it to everyone. It’s one of those awful places where there is too much bureaucracy getting in the way of a solution.

It seems like we’ve had a shooting once a year on Dearborn. Here was that last one that was reported on the CD NEWS.

    http://www.centraldistrictnews.com/2011/11/14/man-shot-in-gr

The city response is totally not acceptable.

  8. everyone, listen…

“the other dark places in the n’hood”

    -Richard Wells

and then his buddy Grumbo comes on all…

“Direct action by a core group of residents is required. That means risk.”

these people are insane fascists that use every flash point to push their agenda of cleansing the neighborhood. dont buy it.

  9. Cigarettes, cheap booze etc….and just how many establishments in our n’hood sell such products? Duh! Shut down all of them: Walgreens, Red Apple, Am/Pm, Safeway, and every Mom n Pop store. Is this America? Gimme a break!

  10. Oh, correct me if I am wrong, Richard. However, NONE of the business’s located within a certain proximity/designated zone of Seattle is allowed to sell “fortified” wine, beer, etc. Not just Parnell’s! I am in no way an advocate of Parnell’s and I feel that it is unfair that they be singled out. Again.
Grumbo, I sincerely wish you well with your vigilant attitude. In a way I understand your primitive ideas. But violence is wrong, and so is trying to intimidate others upon presumption. I call it profiling.

  11. Well Clearly We Have A Problem,

I motion that the neighborhood does get involved and that it should happen on Friday and Saturday night. I vote that the neighbors get out and make themselves visible. I also vote that we all come around the table and share a meal or two.
I’m willing to put up my equipment from my business The Kitchen Sink Project, http://www.kitchensinkproject.com
to be uses for some sort of food share (soup, pasta, etc) run by the neighborhood for the neighborhood. I can not formulate this project on my own so if you wish to volunteer to help set this up feel free to contact me [email protected]. I always believe that the answers to gaining understanding here are best solved over a meal and that if people are seen committing crimes or acting inappropriately they’ll feel bad about it and do it less plain an simple. If the neighborhood wishes to help turn Dearborn street into a community driven meeting place or common area then I’m all on board for that and behind it 100%.
Although I am not altogether pleased with many of the behaviors I see happening outside of Parnell’s I still consider them neighbors. We’re not all going to get along with our neighbors but what we can do is bridge a gap and I feel that we haven’t taken a deep enough look at what’s actually going to curb this problem as much as we’ve looked at how we want to fight it. Community Building is baby steps that make a greater whole and I think that’s one thing that the Central District really understands and takes a lot of pride in…so…let’s eat and figure it out.

  12. Way to project your own preconceptions, there.
I read “the other dark places in the n’hood” and didn’t think about race at all.

But you jumped right to it, didn’t you?

  13. I believe you will step up and try. Nobody will have the care to follow your leadership. I care, but, the whole respect everyone, listen and break bread thing is out of my skill set. Still a good idea though.

My thing is presence. Being on the street. Owning the hood. Dearborn/Parnelles/26th Jackson loop is my designated expansion zone. It’s out of my normal zone, but, the rats from there spill into my area, so I began patrolling up that way a while back. I’m not over there enough to now the characters well or have an effect, yet. Will definately need significant help.

My own zone I get a lot of patrol time in and know who everybody is, even alot of the interlopers. I kick out anybody commiting a crime. Often I just tell them to move on and follow them out. Usually they just stop coming. I don’t tolerat look outs on the corners. No cars with people just sitting there – unless they live here or are waiting for a resident. I look at them, photograph them. It’s rude as heck. But, virtually all of the crack heads, dealers, and whores are gone. it’s a much better few blocks than when I moved in 7 or 8 years ago.

The Parnell’s/26th crowd is much more entrenched and local. They will resist eviction. They will never give up drugs and violence. The neighborhood will have to accept them or accept that evicting them will not be nice.

  14. So – Shilo Baptist has meetings and works with the community?

How about basic crime prevention solutions like cleaning up, maintaining the fence line, and vegitation. Weed wacking the South and East sides of their property and improving the area on the slope into the park/school area. Nobody would mind if they helped keep that area weed whacked. How about installing some lighting and a camera and keeping the trash cleaned up. A little paint on the building. I care doesn’t mean – I have meetings and sing kumbaya. It means cleaning up. Getting out on the corner and taking a stand against crime. But they won’t. Crime, drugs, prostitution, theft is the values of that area. It’s the people. It’s not the city’s fault. It’s not Reagan’s fault. It’s not Obama’s fault. It is Shilo’s, Parnell’s, and the residents on 26th fault.

  15. >>Oh, correct me if I am wrong, Richard. However, NONE of the business’s located within a certain proximity/designated zone of Seattle is allowed to sell “fortified” wine, beer, etc. Not just Parnell’s!

If what you mean is various different specific zones, that’s true. The city designates specific areas (Pioneer Square area is one, for example) inside of which merchants cannot sell fortified spirits. Not the whole city, but specifically designated areas.

  16. Hey. I own a brick and mortar business in the CD.(12+years). In the past i’ve had trouble with drug dealers and random street people(junkies, hooker, etc). It’s not hard to tell who they are. I simply do not serve them and call 911 OFTEN.(the latter is very effective). I have the right to refuse service to them. If you take away the inviting environment(ie, no cops around) they will go elsewhere. I have seen drug deals go down inches from your front door and then watch them go into the market seconds later. I do not service drug dealers or loiterer. I call 911 when they are hanging around in front of my business. Maybe you should take some action in that direction and become proactive and not just sit there and let it happen. Calling 911 is not hard and it lets the cops know where the trouble spots are. An unclean house attracts rats.

  17. Once again we’re running the gamut from accusations of racism to vigilantism to social work, and I’m sure the police will want to have yet another community meeting so we can voice our concerns. Bless you all, but I’ve been through this a thousand times before. All I want to see is some real police/legal attention paid to the fact that Parnell’s parking lot is the gathering place for all the miscreants that spread their wares and afflictions through the neighborhood. That’s all…that’s all.

And with that I will bow out of the conversations because we’re close enough to diminishing returns.

  18. If you live between Judkins Park and MLK and south of Jackson to I-90, you are in the Colman Neighborhood Association boundaries.

Almost 200 neighbors here use NextDoor Colman to work together on all kinds of stuff and chat. From complicated issues like dealing with drug dealers or getting grants to improve Judkins Park to simple stuff like posting lost cats or getting recommendations for house repairs, etc.

    http://colman.nextdoor.com

This system requires you to use your real name and address to access, which means there are no internet trolls and a much more respectful dialogue than on this news site about how to actually solve problems.

  19. I am a homeless disabled vet with a college degree that have been living in my vehicle for three years now. I am dying. Not one of you do gooders have ever offered to help me in any way whatsoever. And all the so called help is a farce. It really makes me wonder about you territorial vigilante styles that seem to want to create your own little private Nirvana. Perhaps you belong in gated communities. I am sorry that it hurts your eyes and egos so much to have us about. Maybe you could work up a final solution, maybe some sort of camps. Most of what you see is the symptoms of a greater problem .

  20. Being a veteran myself, i wanted to tell you that there are many agencies that are willing to assist vets. The first step is asking for some help. The Seattle VA has a drop in social worker located in building 24 that can explain to you the various programs that are available to homeless (and not homeless) vets. There are work rehab programs available, there are resources to assist you with receiving medical care, following up with a claim that is in progress or assistance in initiating a service connected claim. There is an agency located in downtown Seattle (123 3rd avenue Suite #300) that can assist you with many other resources and programs. http://www.kingcounty.gov/socialservices/veterans.aspx by downloading the brochure that is included at this link, you can see the many programs that are offered. Homeless vets right now is a priority with the VA and there are lots of programs that you may be eligible for. 1-200-4AID-VET (1-800-424-3838)is available 24 hours a day. You will speak to a live person who will in turn refer you to a local homeless specialist in your area. Here is the link to that phone number and website: http://www.va.gov/homeless from one vet to another, good luck.

  21. Thank you for your help but as I have sufferd a severe brain injury. As a result I suffer from extreme paranoia that prevents me from entering building unless the ceiling are high. Before I my condition was this severe I did follow these paths and they led to dead ends. One of the reasons there are so many homeless is that it can be very dificult to overcome such a situation. I am currently trying to find an advocate to escort me thru the process. My SSDI provides more than enough money that I probably can afford bottom rung housing. I have no alcohol, drug or gambling problems , no felonies ; only a poorly functioning mind. Once again Thank you for your help and concern and be assured that I have not or will not stop trying.

  22. some of the agencies can help you with a deposit when you do find some housing. I agree, it is overwhelming to get back on your feet. Please email me offsite at [email protected] as i have some other resources that you may be interested in. Good luck and hope to hear from you soon. Gianna

  23. Grumbo is a dingbat, but there is something to be said for getting out on the street and being another set of eyes. There’s nothing wrong with telling drug dealers, hookers, etc to move along, either. Successful neighborhoods are about engaging people.

As for derelict housing, we tend to wring our hands and say that it must be old people who can’t keep up with the maintenance. That may be true, but there are many services in town that will do that work for free for eligible seniors. Or, you can always offer to mow and weed for them. If their pride gets in the way, tell them you’ll do it for a beer or a cup of coffee or something. If they’re young and lazy, maybe it’s time to set the city on them. Or, if it’s a case of a crappy landlord, start pressuring them to fix it or sell it.

I do agree that churches have a special responsibility to keep their property up, both out of respect to the taxpayers, who allow them a tax exemption, but especially because it is the Lord’s house. When the Pastor’s car is nicer than the church grounds, there’s something not quite right going on. (I’m not singling out any specific church, but they are out there)

Lastly, I do think the stores with parking lots have a responsibility to keep their lots clean. Just as a good business keeps the sidewalk in front of their store clean. It’s extra work, but they have a business advantage.

  24. Some VA services are accessible online too, hopefully you can find an advocate within that can help you get the services and resources you’ve earned.

Keep at it… we need Vets to get the help they need. Then, once on more stable footing they can lend a hand to new vets who need help from someone who really gets it. No shortage of vets needing help and no one better than a vet to be there for them

  25. 26. Gosh Omari! What took you so long? Thank you for turning a discussion about my neighborhood into a one man comedy act. I wonder if you will even read this read this reply, as it would seem that all of the comments directed at you, in response to your ridiculous posts, go unread. Myself and the people on my street who have Commented on this story are bright, committed and involved citizens. And get this, some of these neighbors are not even white or of European descent. Wowsers, huh?
Here’s some advice, you big doofus: Unlock your caps and take a laxative.

  27. Did somebody say something?
My basic policy is, “ALL CAPS/ignore”.

I’ve rarely seen anyone who types in all caps make any coherent points. Whenever you see all caps, the odds are pretty good it’s not worth reading.

  28. IF YOU DIDN’T KNOW BY NOW THE NATIVE “AMERICANS/INDIANS” WANT THEIR LAND BACK AND WANT REPARATIONS FOR THE MURDEROUS DESTRUCTION EUROPEAN BOAT PEOPLE (PILGRIMS) FOR THE 500 YEARS OF SUFFERING FROM EUROPEAN SETTLER COLONIAL JUDEO-CHRISTIAN TERRORISM! PLEASE RE-READ YOUR HIS-STORY? NAZISM AND GENOCIDE / CONCENTRATION CAMPS (RESERVATIONS) DID NOT ORIGINATE IN GERMANY? JUST ASK THE NATIVE AMERICAN “RENEGADES” ? DID YOU NOT READ ABOUT THE ORIGINAL 13 COLONIES ESTABLISHED THROUGH THE MURDER OF THOUSANDS OF NATIVE AMERICANS AND FOLLOWED BY THE MURDER OF MILLIONS MORE AND MILLIONS OF BUFFALOES? PLEASE GET YOUR HEADS OUT OF THE SAND? YES THE BRITISH RECENTLY GAVE HONG KONG BACK TO CHINA WHO THEY STOLE IT FROM ??? OMARI TAHIR, AFRICATOWN/CENTRAL DISTRICT RE-ORIENTED HISTORIAN AND FOUNDER OF THE AFRICAN AMERICAN HERITAGE MUSEUM AND CULTURE CENTER AT THE FORMER COLMAN SCHOOL SITE

  29. Omari, I hate to break it to you, but the “white Europeans” didn’t invent oppression and genocide. It’s been around forever, including in Africa. And nobody’s giving anything back, so put down your bong and turn off your bullhorn.

Maybe we can return the conversation to the topic and stay out of Omariland?

  30. Hey Omari,
Since you’re so intent on bringing up all wrongs committed by all people, with regard to African’s being brought to this country against their will, I thought I would let you know that you’ve left out a group of people who surely deserve some blame. Namely, the Ashanti tribe in Ghana. Did you know that they were slave traders before the white men showed up, and get this, they thought so low of people from other tribes that they traded slaves in exchange for the Europeans’ beads and guns. If you’re going to talk so much hate and blame, why not start from the very beginning?
Next time I go visit my family in Ghana, I’ll be sure to let you know. Maybe you’d be interested in writing some all caps hateraid for the Ashanti Tribe. I’d be happy to deliver if for you.

  31. Well OK then neighbor. You just agreed with and repeated exactly what I have been saying. I guess calling your self friendly neighbor rather than some thing funny like grumbo means you are not a dingbat. Still thought I’m pretty sure you should also be called Zimmerman.

When people can’t find fault with consistently accurate points they resort to name calling and character assination.

My points are all regurgitated expert guidance regarding crime prevention. Simple stuff that when consistenly employed by citizens yeild a reduction in crime and improved lives for all the residents be they white, black, homeless or well off. The only question is – why are so many people hiding in their houses and worrying about Zimmerman? People are basically arguing for doing nothing and letting criminals dominate. How strange and rude to attack me. Seems like a four letter followed by off would be appropriate.

As for the homeless vet. I see you guys in the cars. I’ve judged and accepted some of you as my neighbors. I can tell the difference between a guy trying to get buy and a pimp, drug dealer or look out. I drive them out. I leave the guy in theat grey and blue chevy van alone and the guy in the volvo, and the people up around the church. Offer you help? How? you duck into your car and don’t say hi. You just said you are paranoid, dying, and have a brain injury that can’t be fixed. There isn’t much that can be done and you know it. Don’t put that on us.

  32. WO-HO-TE-SEN (TE-TEN) LIVED IN GHANA FOR 4 YEARS,(TRADE FAIR SITE, DANSOMAN ESTATES,ACCRA NEWTOWN,KUMASI,tECHIMAN, BOLE, LIATI, LEGON BAMBOI,CAPE COAST, ASIA (JAPAN, SOUTH EAST ASIA) AND ALL OVER EUROPE. NOT ONLY WAS THE ASANTEHENI AND THE ASHANTI’S BIG SLAVE TRADERS, WHEN THE BRITISH OUTLAWED THE SLAVE TRADE THE GA-MANCHE AND THE GA HAD TO TEAM UP WITH THE BRITISH, EWE AND OTHER SMALLER TRIBES TO STOP THE ASHANTI FROM CONTINUING TO RAID FOR SLAVES? ALL AFRICANS ARE NOT ANGELS “LIVING IN TREES” AND ALL EUROPEANS ARE NOT “CAVE DWELLING” DEVILS? ANYWAY AKWABA TO AFRICATOWN/CENTRAL DISTRICT HERE IN THE GREAT PACIFIC NORTHWEST (COLONIZED DUWAMISH “INDIAN COUNTRY”)! OMARI TAHIR

  33. this comment is almost entirely fascistic. either these people all know each other and are some sort of conspiracy (least likely) or they are such firm believers in free market capitalism, total police control over a neighborhood, city, state, etc., that have basically become fascists and thus are acting like such.

i’m still reeling from the brazenness of what they are doing and how people still aren’t seeing it (let alone the actions of the police who act as their muscle).

here’s a question to anyone who is not one of these right wing trolls and fake accounts:

do you see whats going on? you like these weirdos stirring up hatred and distrust? do you like total police control and cultural extermination? well, if not, flush out these pre-fascists.

  34. Omari, I’m still waiting on your response as to how it was not gentrification when the new black middle class brought in waves during WWII benefited (via firesale prices on CD homes) from the internment in concentration camps of all of Japantown and it’s surrounding neighborhood (which spread all the way to 26th and Jackson in the CD and included parts of Beacon Hill). Since gentrification seems to be the cuss word of the day, please explain how the former was not gentrification. Seems to me it certainly was.

  35. I am much more concerned about things we can do something about. We cannot give the city back to the Duwamish. There are only a few of them alive and they pretty much look like white folks. Let’s give them a floating Casino in the middle of Elliot Bay – built from the old 520 pontoons. That will make things right.

A bigger modern problem is the sex slave trade perpetrated by Blood and BGD members right here in our city, right now. These thugs lure young women into their trade by inviting them to parties, getting them stoned and drunk and starting an insideous plan to degrade the girls reputations and self esteem. The gangsters trap them in a scheme that would shame them and then get them to commit crimes, steal from parents and grand parents, take lewd photos – under the guise that then their prior indiscretions will be forgiven. All that they get is more and more ‘evidence’ piling up, destroyed reputations, strife at home, stealing and forging checks is next. They are conived into being indebted to the gangster. They are estranged from family and friends. And then they are prostituted at ages from 14 and up. That is the gang life. That is slavery today. It is done by those red hat underwear showing bloods gang members on the streets of the CD. And the mission is fully supported my Seattle Weekly and Village Voice Media. This has been evidenced by SPD, Mayor McGinn, and, in the case of VVM – numerous state attourney generals, county prosecutors, the University of Washington, and others.

Shame on the BGD and Bloods. Shame on Seattle Weekley. Shame on us for tolerating slave trading right here at home. Let’s send the BGD and Bloods packing. They kill, rape, and sell our citizens. Zero tolerance for gang culture. Zero tolerance for Seattle Weekly.

  36. AllrightWTF: Carefull man we’re going to have you put into a straight jacket. Your paranoid delusions are a danger to society. We can’t tolerate you kind and hope to have a decent homeland for the righteous people. Please use your real name when posting. I am John Grumbo. I live in the 1800 block of King Street. That is my real name – goobers.

  37. you are not real grumbo. and these comments you people make are insane. you sound like you work for the police. leave parnells alone, leave everyone alone.

  38. And this is EXACTLY what Grumbo was talking about when John “we can’t tolerate you [sic] kind” Grumbo says “Direct action by a core group of residents is required. That means risk.”

He’s talking about how entitled he is to get rid of the “bad” elements, the troublemakers. He and his friends here are total fucking psychopaths hellbent on sweeping out people who lower their property values.

  39. We’ll Oby. You have no reading comprehension and your paranoia is spinning out of control. Had you actually read my comments you would know I was talking about criminals. How you continue to argue that criminal means black or homeless is really odd. Criminal is not interchangable with black. Just as Terrorist is not interchangable with Muslem or Smart with Asian.

Note – when I say criminal – I mean rapist, murderer, pimp, meth/crack or similarly toxic drug (excepting pot or booze and lower grade isolates of opeoids, perhaps mescaline, and coffee), burglars, chronic theives, chronic vandals, and moochers. Also those convicted of mopery.

Stop being a cry baby Oby.

  40. Gia – It is really more kind than most know that you offer to help. I mean that sincerely. I spent over a decade navigating the abuse factory that is the Seattle VA. I am a person who has not suffered traumatic brain injury, PTSD, or other impairing medical or mental health concerns, and I nonetheless found the VA system set up to make one give up. Uniformly they treated my vet family member like garbage, continually cancelled appointments made months in advance to the almost indescribable detriment of that person’s cancer treatment, and ultimately sped his decline. Voicemails always full, calls never returned, calling every single day to no avail – one time I made a calendar and noted a call once per day, every day, to the RN supposedly managing my family member’s care. I only finally got a call back when I harassed the hell out of Jim McDermott’s staff by phone. I have never, ever, not at DSHS, not in jails, not in hospitals in two third world countries I visited, not anywhere encountered staff so uniformly bent on NOT helping people, to the extent that they actually cause harm. It’s a national shame that this is how we treat out vets. So thank you for offering to help the poster here try to get the services we owe him. I wish you both much, much better luck than I had.
