No felony charges in UW athlete rape investigation

King County prosecutors will not file felony charges against an unnamed UW basketball player accused of raping a 16-year-old in an apartment near Garfield High School last month. From Seattle Times:

The King County Prosecutor’s Office will not file felony criminal charges against a member of the University of Washington men’s basketball team accused of sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl last month, according to a source familiar with the decision.

The case will now be referred to the Seattle City Attorney’s Office to determine if misdemeanor charges are warranted, the official said.

Members of the prosecutor’s office met with the girl’s family Friday morning to tell them of the decision, according to the girl’s mother.

The player had been under investigation since the alleged incident occurred on Jan. 8. Police submitted a report to the prosecutor’s office, which spent the past few weeks reviewing the case before reaching its decision.

The Seattle Times is not naming the player because he has not been criminally charged.
