Holiday lights on a Saturday night at 23rd and Union

We reported on the meeting. The invite to come out and help was posted here. Might as well cover some of the results. It’s not going to change the world. But it’s something. Happy holidays, 23rd and Union style.

  1. “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed, citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”

  2. lol. I’m really not trying to be a Grinch but it looks weird to have lights strung up on empty lots and closed up businesses. I don’t get a festive vibe. It’s just kinda creepy and sad, like “hang in there Christmas people, there’s always next year!” It’s kind of like what many families have to do this year because things aren’t going so good. Hey kids, here’s the tree, lights, and decorations. Sorry we couldn’t afford to get you any presents.

  3. I really appreciate the lights. My teenager commented as we drove home late last night “they give a really good feel, much more pleasant.”

Sure, the lights don’t address the issue of recession or real estate speculation, let alone historic redlining, but they show some interest in and commitment to the corner. And, they’re pretty. Thanks to those who helped with hanging them.

  4. Ian and others – thanks for doing this.

And is there any group that would be able and willing to perform some live holiday music on the plaza some early evening or week end? I think a lot of neighbors would attend.

  5. Thanks so much to everyone who came out to hang the lights, and thank you to the various business and land owners who I have been chatting with in the last few days about the Union Street Business Group. Ian’s right – we have to start somewhere. I think presenting hope this holiday season is important, and seeing you guys pull together to do this definitely gives me hope.

  6. Carolyn, I think Will and Jason are planning a nice Holiday celebration with caroling and other fun stuff for the neighborhood. I am sure they will post something soon.

  7. As my husband and I drove through the intersection yesterday, we commented on how much nicer it looks. Not creepy at all! Thanks to the volunteers who took the time to put up the lights.

  8. I think this was a wonderful thing to do. It is volunteers like this that give neighborhoods a better name!

  9. No, Ian it doesn’t look like a “streetwalker” unless by streetwalker you mean someone who is walking on the street and not someone who is a prostitute. If you want people to walk around on that corner then maybe inferring that pedestrians in skirts look like prostitutes is not a good tactic.

Question: Is that what you normally think of when you see a woman in a skirt?

  10. Jennifer – You are right. No it is not what I normally think of when I see a woman in a skirt, lol. Maybe I am just overly sensitive about the corner’s reputation. Sorry, didn’t mean to offend.

  11. we have 4 landowners whose properties have a combined value closing in on 7 million dollars and they try to make up for their lameness by putting up a few strings of LED holiday lights?

I know this sounds very bam humbug and don’t get me wrong, I’m glad they are finally doing something .. but .. I know there is a recession and Jim Mueller can’t build but most of these properties have been neglected by their owners even at the height of the building boom
