  1. Umm, is the Greenwood Concert Band really from the neighborhood? And Bakra Bata?? The CD has so many quality musicians why these choices? They are both extremely corny.

  2. I don’t know about Greenwood Concert Band, but Bakra Bata band members have faced a tremendous challenge this past year. The band includes relatives of the Lakewood cop killer, who did the right thing and called police and then had their house tear gassed by police and instruments ruined. What’s your definition of “corny”? I like steel drums – they are sublime.

BTW, your username seems to be a good description of your attitude.

  3. I didn’t know that about bakra bata. Thank you for cluing me in. My definition of corny does include steel drum bands but I am totally willing to reevaluate that stance. It’s true I am a cranky putz but that’s not the sum of me for sure. Now you have me all curious about your name, zebragirl. Do you want to get coffee/tea sometime?

  4. Bakra Bata’s founder and artistic director, Michael Shantz, and his wife, Chrisceda Clemmons, asked the Leschi Community Council for an opportunity to provide a free performance at a community event to show their appreciation for the support they received after they lost their home and all of their belongings last November.

As for the Greenwood Concert Band, they played at last year’s 100 year Celebration of Leschi Park and were a great hit!

  5. This Band is not made up of Greenwood musicians; they come from all over the city and even one of the islands. They have incorporated young kids from local schools (Washington Middle and Garfield) and the ocnductor gives lessons to kids weekly at Washington Middle. They also incorporate some symphony folks and will feature a clarinet soloist from the US Army Field Band. They are good musicians and they play a variety of musical pieces. I guess it depends on what one considers corny; it is not Pat Boone stuff which seems corny to me. Sorry I don’t have the program but will try to get it and post it for those wishing to avoid corny.
As for Bakra Bata, Michael and Ceda are Leschi residents and have been since the mid 8o’s so they are definitely neighborhood.
