Burglary analysis: $34,761 stolen in last 60 days

We've completed an analysis of crime report data from our partners at SeattleCrime.com, showing a total of 22 burglaries in the neighborhood since December 1st, totaling up to $34,761 in loses.

The big lesson is that today's burglars are after valuable electronics that they can easily resell. Laptops are by far the the most popular item. A good prevention measure is to not leave your laptops laying out when you're gone. Hide them out of sight.

Here's a summary of those events:

missing info?
Our neighbors (at 24th and Marion) were burgalarized a week or so after Christmas and the info isn't listed. Several police were on the scene, so there should be a record of it. Following the trend listed above, they stole a laptop and attempted to steal a television.

RE: missing info?
SPD's pattern of releasing reports is a bit haphazard, so we may not have that one yet

reward?
2 thoughts - is there a reward for the perps? It seems that someone stealing for petty cash and stuff to pawn might be enticed to turn someone in for good cash. Or can there be a reward for the first homeowner to successfully defend their house with their personal, licensed firearm and take one of these punks out?

RE: reward?
The reward will be serving time in lock up for taking out some punk that will later be considered a young boy turning his life around. He will be a nice kid who was needlessly gunned down by society. Most of us will love you for doing it, which won't matter or help your ordeal. An alternative to taking out a punk is to pressure those who are letting them off their leash. Parent/s, lawyers and judges at Youth Service center. When they hide behind laws go after the legislators and make new ones, we're good at it. Perhaps a 3 burg strikes and your locked up till 18 or you get your act together.
What are these kids learning by stealing and realizing that they can't be stopped? They will make great thieves that have learned to work the system by the time they become adults.

There are more than 22 dots on the map. What is the map showing?

RE: map
It's showing property crimes, including thefts and vehicle prowls. Burglaries are when someone breaks into a house or business and steals, vs. thefts where something is just stolen from outside, inside a vehicle, etc.

$34K only accounts for partial stolen property, misses damages
Thanks for the report. Some quick context as we think about the 'value' noted here. I wouldn't be surprised if the actual amount of loss incurred is closer to $150,000 or more for that timeframe. The $34K is only for the value of actual property that was reported stolen in a formal submission by the homeowner in hopes of recovery. If something was damaged but not missing, it wouldn't be listed (the police don't track that, only insurance will). And, items will only be listed if the homeowner files a report with the police department of all items. Mostly what the police can address are the items with serial numbers that can be traced/entered into their database for pairing up with items recovered from people and/or crime scenes later, so people often don't list all the smaller items that also were taken, but don't rank above a certain value or have traceable tags.

When we were burglarized back in June, the 3 people who did it (we came home during, only one was caught and convicted) not only stole over $12K in 'stuff', they did damages to items worth another $4K, and damages to the house of over $15K - breaking a door and shattering the entire entryway, destroying a big screen tv and severely damaging the hardwood floors they dropped it on when they saw us, etc. Thankfully, no one was hurt, our insurance handled the damages, and it's only 'stuff'. But, the numbers clearly can't tell the full story of either the monetary or the emotional costs of dealing with a burglary.

add my house to the list
I was robbed Jan-12th (26th Ave. S and Washington), took laptop and game consoles and camera and unlocked firesafe and 20 lighters I got in bulk at costco. $2000 reported to police/insurance, another $500 of stuff that couldn't be reported. They ransacked the place but didn't hurt my cats (they left food out for them, even) or damage anything else.
