My son goes to Giddens, right behind Washington, so I called Giddens to find out the deal. Apparently the school is in lockdown because on an internal incident. A student threatened someone.
We live just 2 blocks from the school so I'm guessing the helicopters are in response to this lock down.
You should talk to Giddens school...I would think they should have had the same response as Washington because of their close proximity to the call...as you now know it was not an internal incident but a, non specific external threat to kids in general.
I was at Starbucks right down the street just after 3pm and an SPD officer appeared to be watching the bus stop while he opened the door each time someone came in or out of Starbucks. There was a helicopter overhead, too. I thought it was odd that he was manning the door. Now I know why!
My kids go to Giddens School. I'm ultra-pissed at the SPD for the completey imbalanced response. The KING 5 report (which could be wrong, but who knows) said someone called 911 “threatening to kill children” with no specific school mentioned. Tracking the phone location, SPD puts a HUGE presence at Washington Middle School, but doesn't even CALL Giddens (which is right across the street), or the child care center right behind us? WTF??? There was an SPD presence at the Starbucks, which is further away than my school, and we don't even rate a phonecall? My kindergartner's class was walking around the block, practicing their MLK peace-rally marching skills, and they walked smack into a whole crapload of cops with guns drawn. Super. Just shield your little heads with your plastic "Peace and Love" signs, kids, and wave at the nice swat team. And yes, those ARE assault rifles. Thanks for the no heads-up SPD, for scaring the bejeezus out of my kids and teachers AND exposing them to potentially lethal danger, completely unnecessarily. SPD should have called ALL schools in that neighborhood. Our admin canceled our participation in the MLK rally today, and I applaud that decision. There are still cops cars behind us, no resolution that we've heard and anyway, now SPD's communications are untrustworthy. My school's admin folks aren't dumb; they recall Chechnya, and Dundee. Someone threatening to kill children might be some grumpy middle schooler who doesn't like geometry. Or it might be a completely horrendous disaster.
My kids went to Giddens when it was called Happy Medium. Perhaps there's more office staff now, and better security, but when my kids went there the office was frequently empty (thus hard to reach by phone) and there was zero security. I hope that has changed. Did you check with Giddens to see if SPD had tried to contact anyone there?
