Year In Review: 2009 Scanner Wrap-Up

2009 was the second year of the daily scanner report, covering the events of Seattle's East Precinct as they happen. We had 231 reports, recording 3,805 individual events. Here's how they shook out:

  • 614 Disturbances - (down 26% vs 2008) - with lots of shouting, blocking, arguing, and refusing to leave
  • 311 Suspicious Circumstances - (up 44% vs 2008) - mostly where people think someone is casing their area for burglaries
  • 286 Narcotics Activity (up 21% vs 2008)
  • 261 Shoplifting events (down 6%)
  • 244 Accidents (up 10%)
  • 178 Assaults (down 3%)
  • 165 Alarms (down 23%)
  • 127 Robberies (up 8%)
  • 122 Fights (up 27%)
  • 105 Burglaries (down 45%)
  • 100 Thefts (down 26%)
  • 98 Threats (up 40%)
  • 92 Shots Fired
  • 85 Welfare Checks
  • 73 Weapons Call
  • 72 Hit & Runs
  • 68 Family Disturbances
  • 42 Property Damages
  • 34 Frauds
  • 33 Car Prowls
  • 32 911 Hang-Ups
  • 24 Foot Pursuits
  • 22 Warrant Arrests
  • 21 Missing Children
  • 16 Stolen Vehicles
  • 13 Shootings
  • 12 Harrassments
  • 10 Overdoses
  • 10 Prostitutions

(Note that the stats above are very unofficial and don't mean anything other than we recorded that many events this year vs. last)

The scanner will start up for the new year next Monday 1/4/2010.

Burglaries, robberies, etc.
Curious... what is the difference between a burglary, a theft, and a robbery? Does it have to do with assault or what type of property stolen?

(c) To appropriate lost or misdelivered property or services of another, or the value thereof, with intent to deprive him or her of such property or services.

Robbery, RCW 9A.56.190: A person commits robbery when he unlawfully takes personal property from the person of another or in his presence against his will by the use or threatened use of immediate force, violence, or fear of injury to that person or his property or the person or property of anyone. Such force or fear must be used to obtain or retain possession of the property, or to prevent or overcome resistance to the taking; in either of which cases the degree of force is immaterial. Such taking constitutes robbery whenever it appears that, although the taking was fully completed... read more

Homicides
I wonder how many homicides, since I know of at least 2. They are not listed above. Did I miss something?
