Pedestrian improvements eyed for 12th & Union

There's some unloved asphalt on Union just east of 12th Avenue. Westbound traffic isn't allowed there, leaving a block of roadway next to Pony that sees very little vehicle-oriented action.

But the Seattle Department of Transportation has a plan to use the neighborhood street fund to reclaim that part of the roadway and provide wider sidewalks, angled parking, and some improved landscaping:

Here's the official description from the design document linked above:

"Reclaim" approximately 3500 sq. ft. of roadway by narrowing Union St and providing wider sidewalks, pedestrian lighting, landscaping, angled parking, and improved bicycle connections. Reduce peestrian crossing distances along Madison and 13th St.

The recent move of Pony to the spot has been an enabling factor in the project, as the previous florist that was on the site required delivery truck access from Union. But Pony has no need for those, making room for the pedestrian amenities instead.

SDOT will present their plan at tonight's Central Area District Council meeting at 6pm at the Douglass-Truth Library.

Yes!
That is such a confusing intersection for most people that getting rid of it entirely like this would be a huge step forward. Can't tell you how many times I have to wave people away from staying in the left hand lane when they are planning on hanging a left on Madison, totally counter intuitive.

Adding some trees would be a great improvement.

Good news!
I've seen a lot of drivers turn left onto Madison from the right-only lane that is southwest of Pony- even shuttle vans. And it's understandable the first time they do it - such a confusing mess. So it looks as if it will fix that and make it more attractive besides. Hope it happens soon!

love it
I walk by this every day and was just thinking the other day about what a waste of space all of that pavement was. This will be great!

so you'd back into those parking spaces?
people turn off madison onto union going pretty fast. hard to understand how those backward parking spaces are going to work.

overall GREAT change, though.

Isn't there a bus stop just east of the corner of 12th/Union?
I hope the narrowing of Union will still allow others to pass a bus stopped there, half in and half out of the road, as they always seem to be at this corner. Maybe the stop will be moved or something...

RE: Isn't there a bus stop just east of the corner of 12th/Union?
The bus stop is at the other end of the block, at 13th. Looks like it's just one lane to me, which is fine with me. They brought out the bus stops on the Ave so that cars couldn't pass the bus. The point is so that the bus doesn't have to merge back into traffic (which is often difficult because people don't let buses back in, even though they're required to by law). Besides, they only come by like every 10 minutes at the most frequent times. Not a big impact.

this is great
Great news! Why not also reclaim one of those 2 left turning lanes on 13th ave, also? I doubt the traffic loads here require 2 full lanes...

RE: this is great
Sometimes both lanes are full all the way back onto Union, especially if a bus is included in the line-up. And the bus has to be in the right lane in order to continue its route to Union on the other side of 12th. It would help if the no-parking was enforced in front of the newish condos in the middle of the 1300 block of the north side of E. Union.

How to make sure this happens?
I'm SUPER in favor of this. I missed the meeting last week. Anyone know how we can lobby/volunteer to make this plan a reality?
