CDN just got word of a meeting for Leschi residents and business owners to discuss the recent violence and police activities in their neighborhood. We don't have any other information about who from SPD or East Precinct will be there but this sounds like a good opportunity for people to discuss the situation with the people who can best answer questions about what happened and what happens next.

Update: We talked with a member of the Leschi community council about tonight's meeting. She let us know that it was called by Lt. John Hayes and he will be there to answer questions and talk with residents.

"Special Meeting For Leschi Community"

When: Tuesday Night 6pm-7pm

Where: Central Area Senior Center 30th Ave S/ King St

Topic: SPD wants to talk with community ( The Community has experienced a great deal of Trauma in the last thirty days.)

Please come with questions for SPD

Respectfully,

Sharon Sobers
Leschi Community Council President

There is also the monthly East Precinct Community Crime Prevention meeting on Thursday for residents from across the precinct.

The meeting had several people who seemed to be there to hear themselves speak.
I think that the officers had much more to share, were they given the opportunity to do so. The star, though was an impressive second grade girl, who did her father proud. She's an impressive speaker!
Well done, Lizzie!

It would be great to get a summary of what the officers said. I wasn't able to be at the meeting.

They are sorry that Clemmons is dead. The officer who shot him was on a routine stop, due to the vehicle being stolen. They are grateful to the community & these recent horrible incidents have helped them to help us better. They state that the reason Montfort was captured was the vast number of leads from the community. They acknowledged that mental health resources weren't put out in the media & that might have helped somehow(?), but said that many resources are available & it was made available to the family.

I think that we could have done more listening, but in a one hour forum, perhaps that was all that the officers wanted to convey.

Interesting, looking at the charging docs,

the Leschi Clemmons family seem to have done all that they could. They notified the police & beat it, when they found out that he was headed their way wounded, had guns & had killed the police in Lakewood. Now, that would have been good information to share with us. It changes the way our community is impacted by these tragedies. It's really important to recognize that neither of these crimes were perpetrated by CD residents.

No criticism to the officers, they it seemed came ready to listen--and THAT is a good thing. As a community, let's keep reaching out to our police force. They are our friends.

Thanks for the overview, Gracie! It sounds as if they didn't address the questions I had. I was hoping they'd offer some perspective on "Why Leschi?" (other than pure coincidence, which is what it sounds like it is). I was also hoping that maybe they'd talk about neighborhood crime trends and projections and if there would be any stepped up efforts in protection/crime prevention -- especially in Leschi, on Yesler and nearby Jackson Street.
