SWAT Stand-off in Leschi

Seattle Crime says it might be related to the Pierce County shootings:

SWAT officers have surrounded a home in the Leschi neighborhood and are apparently looking for the person of interest sought in connection with this morning's shooting in Parkland.

The home is on E Superior Street and Erie Avenue.

K9 and negotiator units are on scene.

Seattle police spokesman Sean Whitcomb would only say the SWAT call out "may be" related to the murder of four officers in Parkland this morning. The registered owner of the home shares a last name of the person of interest in the shooting, Maurice Clemmons.

jseattle is on the way to the scene. We'll update this as we learn more.

Update: According to scanner traffic, the suspect involved here is wounded and armed. Anyone in the area of the stand-off should stay in their homes and away from windows.

9:53PM - Media helicopters causing trouble - Just heard Car 7, who I think is now McDonagh, telling news helicopters to back off because they are "compromising safety"
10:07PM - Big Perimeter - FYI - The perimeter for this operation is huge, as far east as 32nd Ave and several blocks north and south of Yesler. If you live in that area, don't leave as it could be some time before you can get home. If you're currently out and trying to get back home, it's unlikely that you'll be allowed until the whole thing is over.
Note that stand-offs often last for hours.
10:18PM - Prepare for noise - It sounds like the tempo of SWAT operations is picking up. If you live in the area, be prepared for lots of loud noises. They've got a big arsenal and it is very, very loud.
Stay in your homes, away from windows, and don't bother calling 911 if you hear what sounds like gunshots.
11:00PM - Update - We're told that negotiators are in contact with the suspect
11:19PM - From the scene - jseattle is talking to Bo Peck at 32nd & Yesler. He's just moving into a new home right near the stand-off. His wife and daughter are currently in the house, and he's in contact via cell phone, but officers are telling him he won't be able to get home for hours.

He's waiting here at the scene. "The officer Brenton killing gave us a jar, but I still think this is a good place to live."
11:33PM - Need a warm spot? - Police are taking displaced citizens near the lake to Daniel's Broiler. It sounds like a Metro Bus is being brought to 31st & Yesler for people on the west side of the perimeter.

If you're stuck away from your home, just ask any officer at a roadblock where you can go.
11:42PM - Obey the rulz plz - "media trying to sneak in on the north side of Leschi school".. Come on guys, you don't want to get any closer to this thing
Update: It's a KIRO 7 van, who were told earlier to leave the area.
11:56PM - Accomplice on the loose - Seattle Crime says: "Police are also looking for a possible accomplice driving a white Buick."
12:02AM - More tools coming in. - RT @SeaSingleVoters: KC sending in tank to Erie Ave & Superior... That would be the Bear Cat
12:13AM - No reason to speculate - Seen some commenters speculate about ties to Monfort, "could this be the real guy", etc. Important to say that there appears to be no connection other than a coincidence of geography. Monfort was repeatedly described as a loner, and although innocent until proven guilty, the DNA and ballistics matches and evidence found in his apartment and vehicle is overwhelming.

In other weird geographic connections, Monfort's October traffic stop is about two blocks from today's SWAT stand-off.

12:31AM - Be set for sound - Sounds like a new level of effort in the SWAT operations. Neighbors nearby should be prepared for more loud noises.
12:55AM - Progress - Stay tuned if you're waiting to get home. Just heard that the SPD spokesperson is being called down to the SWAT scene. Could indicate that things are wrapping up
1:22AM - Operation ongoing - We're hearing that additional loud devices are about to be deployed. Note that the June 22nd SWAT standoff a few blocks south of here lasted for 5.5 hours.
1:41AM - Other police work still happening - We've heard units from the south precinct up here responding to emergency calls in the east precinct, so don't worry about calling 911 if you've got a serious issue. But lower-priority calls (are there ever any of those in the middle of the night?) will likely be delayed until the morning.
2:23AM - SeaTimes on the scene - Looks like Seattle Times photog @despeaux got near the scene somehow. Says he's got an angle from neighbor's balcony. Tear gas also deployed a while ago http://twitter.com/despeaux
3:00AM - Official info - Pierce Co. Sheriff spokesperson Ed Troyer says "He is our suspect. He is shot. We don't know his condition"

What we know right now is that police strongly believe that the suspect involved here is the one that shot four officers dead in Lakewood earlier today. They've previously said he might have been wounded in that event, and it's not clear if he's still alive or even at the scene of the SWAT response. It can take hours for teams to go through that house and the surrounding property to find the suspect.

We live 1/2 mile from this incident and a couple of blocks from the Halloween slaying. Tonight at 10pm, my 3-yr old came downstairs and asked me to sit in his room while he fell asleep because the helicopter noise was making him scared. Years ago wife and I bought a house in Leschi choosing it at my urging over other north-end neighborhoods because of what I saw as authentic diversity and cool grittiness. Now, after years of seeing worthless drug dealers wasting time on neighborhood corners, prostitutes doing tricks in parks, graffiti tagged playgrounds, drive by shooting scenes, and now a SWAT team standoff, it's hard for even an optimist to not give up on Leschi and the CD.

then leave. the upscaling of leschi and the CD isn't making it safer. rich, white folks looking for a diverse experience are making it harder and harder for folks from here to live here. poverty is at the root of these issues, and fancy coffee shops and cupcake stands are driving up property values and making life harder.

if you care, then learn about crime and poverty and check what you're doing to contribute to it.

The helicopter is likely King County Sherriff's Guardian One. It may be monitoring in case a suspect attempts an escape. Or it may be trying to keep media helicopters from seeing/reporting too much. Probably some of both.

No need to use loudspeakers, sirens, etc. as reported on PI if they are in touch. seattlecrime indicates may have been contact earlier. The 1am reflects loudspeaker negotiation.

Chill dude (or dudette). Just linking to what I read ("Police were in contact with Clemmons through the evening and into the early morning hours." "Just after 1:00 a.m., negotiators contacted Clemmons and tried to coax him out of the home." etc). This stuff happening in all of our backyards (to say nothing of the tragedy earlier today that lead to it) is ugly enough without getting testy with each other, too.

I got the year of the Buick and other information off the radio. Three times - i believe - dispatchers or officers made mention of a white, '83 Buick leSabre, license plate 540XVE (I may have misheard the plate; both 'v' and 'e' sounds similar to '3', each other, etc.). The possible accomplice was called out as Eddie Davis (sp?), a "very light-skinned black male" 6'3", 177 1-7-89.

The lone acts of white individuals such as the unabomber, Timothy McVea or even Andrew Mickle who killed a police officer in Red Bluff California, do not reflect on the integrity of all white people, and this one has no bearing on the black community as a whole. I doubt there is any connection between this incident and Halloween. This suspect is related to a family who lives on Erie and apparently he went there for shelter. The family is out of the area and safe. Police advised other families to leave for safety. There seems to be no traffic on East Alder other than police cars so not sure we can leave. Kid needs to get to school (Garfield). Don't think that is going to happen.

Got through the message line to a police person; advised not to leave house. Although the helicopter seems to have stopped, the standoff is still going on apparently. We can't go east and if we try to go west, we won't be able to get back home. I did hear shots and big booms in the night (between 2:25 amd 2:30 and again about 4:45.

It might be noted that Francis Gary Powers, the U-2 pilot who was shot down and imprisoned by the USSR, died in an accident while flying a traffic 'copter' in Houston. Point being these folks do have accidents and having them over a crime scene is not necessary.

I hope the SWAT were able to catch the culprit they were looking for. These criminals are too dangerous to society and have to be kept in a safe place where they cannot harm innocent people.
