Preview of what's to come at 12th & Cherry

The corner of 12th & Cherry has been vacant for years, and has recently been turned into a hole in the ground after tons of soil had to be dug up and hauled away to clean up the toxic remains of an old dry-cleaners. But Seattle U has much bigger plans for it: by the fall of 2011 it will be occupied by a 5-story building with ground-floor retail and 250 new beds for students.

Construction is scheduled to begin next spring. Here's some preliminary renderings of what's coming:

The south side of the building, which will border a small city park

Great!
Great drawings and so nice to see something happening on that corner that will improve the sidewalk front and make the area seem more lively. So far, I am impressed with the work that SU is doing with all of the campus buildings it is renovating or building.

CAPITOL HILL HOUSING?
I have probably slipped out of the loop, but I thought Capitol Hill Housing was set to develop this property.

RE: CAPITOL HILL HOUSING?
joanna: this is the corner at 12th and cherry. CHH has been working on the corner at 12th and jefferson, two blocks south of this site. Scott did an update on 12th and jeff the other day, here: http://www.centraldistrictnews.com/2009/11/10/old-pollution-

thnx
yes, so sorry to have mixed up the corners. The toxic problems here are from an old dry cleaners and at the other site it is the oil.

RE: thnx
apparently, 12th was once home to a high number of mom and pop gas stations and dry cleaners. all of these sites are contaminated!
