Japanese sweets shop coming to Jackson in 2010

Hendrixfan asked a good question in last week's discussion about retail options on Jackson Street:

I've seen signs in a place across the street advertising the opening of a Japanese place - anyone know anything about that?

Today we got in touch with Art Oki, the man behind that project, who said that while things are a bit behind schedule, he is working to get the shop open early in 2010. The plans are for a retail store specializing in Japanese sweets, with a small seating area where people "can sit and enjoy some green tea and sweets."

Art says that his signature treat is a baked good that's like a Japanese version of a snickerdoodle, and that he'll also have a variety of steamed, baked, and pancake-style sweets.

Got another tip on a prospective business in the neighborhood? Leave a comment below or send us an email and we'll chase it down too.

Looks like there is some activity in the old Seattle Central Grind location: miniblinds in the windows and new paint inside. Anyone know what is going on?

Don't forget the bars on the windows that they also added. I am sad because it seems like another low budget operation, but I will hold out hope until it is done.

I'm not understanding what you mean by "another low budget operation". What are you saying? Was Central Grind a low budget operation? What exactly is a low budget operation and what are the other ones?

Ever since the sign first went up I swear I've stood in front of the shop a dozen times looking in the windows and fogging them up like some sort of Dickensian street urchin. When it didn't open in Summer I was afraid it had fallen prey to the crappy economy. I can consume more daifuku in one sitting than an entire Japanese prefecture does in one week.

Ooh! I hope they sell taiyaki! I love them almost as much as daifuku!
Thanks for looking into it! byhendrixfan2 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
Will definitely check it out when it opens.
