The Murder Suspect - What we know so far

The Seattle Times has added significant new information to their story about the suspect in Officer Brenton's murder, who was shot by police yesterday in Tukwila.

He was educated, having graduated from UW in March of 2008 with a degree in criminal justice. And he was part of a scholars program that was preparing him for post-graduate work. It was there that he worked on a paper about the use of jury nullification as a way to help balance the criminal justice system.

A former community college instructor said he was very smart and a natural leader:

"He did very, very well interacting with the other students in my class," said Wegner, who spent 20 years as the deputy director of the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, the organization that trains many of the state's law enforcement officers.

"He always seemed to be a natural leader, and people would gravitate to him. He put in a lot of work and did well academically. He said it was because he finally found something that interested him — the field of criminal justice."

He lived in Tukwila, so he wasn't from the neighborhood, and according to the Times his mother currently lives in Alaska, and he has personally lived in California and Alaska in addition to Washington State.

But he was familiar with the neighborhood, having spent time volunteering at the Youth Services Center at 12th & Alder:

"He was volunteering his Fridays down at juvy hall, trying to get kids on the straight and narrow," Wegner said. "He wanted to try and get them out of the system before they became adults."

A friend of his mother can't believe he could be a suspect:

She said as a longtime family friend she was mystified that Monfort could be considered a suspect.

"I don't get this. People that run around and kill cops have tons and tons of other stuff in their record, and Chris had no gang stuff, I know that."

She said Monfort was an only child and had not married. She did not know anything about his father. "That was a long time ago."

SeattleCrime.com is also discussing a theory for the motive in the crime. A commenter there found that he had a very recent ticket in Seattle for lack of insurance, and that ticket may have cost him his job as a security guard.

We're expecting a press conference from SPD later today around noon. We'll be there with more updates when it happens.

conflicting reports about suspect's gunshot wounds byPhil Mocek3 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
In a comment left in response to another cdnews post, JM wrote, "Q13 just reported the suspect, who did not fire a weapon, was shot in the back of the head, and in the back." In response to a seattlecrime.com post, someone claiming to be a neighbor wrote, "Kiro just reported he is in critical condition and his way into emergency surgery. If you say the live coverage shortly after he was shot they flung him onto the streatcher without a backboard and raced off," WH wrote, "King had a chopper circling - they showed the guy prior to medics. Shot was to torso-abdomen area," and someone (else?) claiming to be a neighbor wrote, "In the pictures of the suspect both when he was shot and when he arrived at harborview there weren't any bandages on his head. Oddly he also didn't appear to be on oxygen (which would be basic care for a gun shot wound anyplace on his body). The new coverage also showed them literally jerking him up by his legs onto the stretcher - so if he was shot in the belly odd that they didn't backboard him?"

More evidence that advocates for 'social justice' are always being victimized.

Another victim of police brutality against communities of color by the so-called police. We must fight the power !

I wonder what kind of grade you get when you advocate such nonsense? I'm sure I don't want to know.

Poor baby, suspected cop killer 'didn't get a backboard'? If I were the EMT I would have been moving, very, very, very slowly. HE PULLED A WEAPON ON THE COPS, nough said.
RE: seriously? byjm3 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
I'm not sure they care about a backboard when there is grey matter coming from a bullet wound in the head. I think they just try to get you to a trauma center as fast as possible.
Phil... so what? byHeath Hunnicutt3 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
What's your point? The scene was not secure, the guy is lucky the medic unit arrived during the time period when it did. For the medic unit to expedite their departure, which they performed under SWAT cover, only makes sense. A backboard takes a lot of time and leaves the EMTs exposed. Remember, this guy had two possible accomplices, and had been using a rifle. Think sniper. No wonder they didn't waste time at ground zero. I'm sure if it weren't for the risk involved, they would have taken all the time in the world strapping that guy to the backboard.

YAY SPD Detectives!!!!! Here's hoping none of the officers involved in the shooting are losing any sleep.
In that jury nullification has been advanced as a tactic to offset the harms caused by racial profiling, byPeggy Sioux3 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
the justification for its use is not comparable to failing to assist in solving a crime. The Racial Disparity Project has been working on issues of racial profiling within King County for the past decade with some limited success. http://www.defender.org/projects/rdp

However, nothing in the theory of jury nullification comes even close to defending the heinous crimes here, stalking and attempting to murder and actually murdering SPD officers apparently based on the color of their skin.

Exactly, far better communities of color protect ourselves from police brutality, the true cause of our oppression.

I don't recall any mention of race in the SPD's profile of the suspect. Also, you seem to imply that SPD had this paper topic before they arrested and ID'd the suspect. Whuuut?

Profiled like Mr. Monfort was! Now they have all the so-called 'evidence' they need, we'll need jury nullifucation to set him free.

Free Monfort!

Free Mumia!

Great work Peggy, Mr. Montfort is clearly a victim of police abuse towards peoples of color.

The 'communities of color' chant is so old and tired. So old. and so tired. Stop letting yourself be oppressed and you will be free...or leave.
Black peole keep each other down, not the police byget real3 months ago (3 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
"Exactly, far better communities of color protect ourselves from police brutality, the true cause of our oppression. " - Che

That is absolutely one the stupidest things ever written. Cops don't keep black people down, black people keep black people down. At least 94% of the roughly 8,000 black people murdered in the USA every year are murdered by other black people.

Check out the numbers for Seattle:

http://tinyurl.com/no5knk

From the article "List of 2008 homicides in Seattle" from the Seattle PI

selected from the list of the 28 Seattle homicides in 2008....

Allen Joplin, Jan. 4 -- black killed by black

De'Che Morrison, Jan. 10 -- black killed by black

Maurice "Moe" Allen Jr., Jan. 26 -- black killed by black

Degene Barecha, Jan. 30 -- black killed by black

Perry Henderson, Feb. 6 -- black killed by black

Stephan Dwaine Stewart, April 2 -- black killed by black

Eldora Earlycutt, July 4 -- black killed by black

James Paroline, July 10 -- white killed by black

Troy Peters, July 22 -- black killed by black

Pierre Lapoint, Aug. 5 -- black killed by black

Jane Kariuki, Oct. 16 -- woman of unknown race killed by black man named Christel D. Murphy

Quincy S. Coleman, Oct. 31 -- black killed by black

Edward McMichael, the "Tuba Man", Nov. 3 -- white killed by multiple blacks

Nathaniel Lee Thomas, Nov. 23 -- black killed by black

So by my count blacks (8% of Seattle) were the killers in at least half (that's at least 50%) of the murders in the Seattle area in 2008, and all but maybe 3 of the victims of black killers were also black. At least five of the other murderers were latinos.

The numbers are actually worse for black-committed murders in the Seattle area in 2009 and approach the 85% mark.

That's because you are using racist statistics.
Wow, way to make up facts! byjm3 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Quincy Coleman's murder has not been solved, for you to say "black killed by black" is just making things up.
RE: Black peole keep each other down, not the police byChe3 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Exactly jm, just because Quincy had known gang ties and an extensive criminal histoory, prejudiced people just assume it was black on black crime!
94%! by94%3 months ago (0 votes) (report abuse)
Yeah! Just because 94% of all blacks murdered in the USA are murdered by another black doesn't mean that Quincy's murderer was black!

There is still a huge 6% chance that his murderer was not black!

you are either an idiot or a troll, che. Are you actually trying to claim the list of murders is wrong and that the seattle pi left off some murders committed by other races? open you eyes and see the obvious reality. whites are not keeping blacks down. blacks keep blacks down. let go of your chains and rise.
that is astounding, che byastounding3 months ago (1 votes) (report abuse) (reply)
