Tomorrow: Leschi community forum to address attacks on SPD

The Leschi Community Council is stunned at the assassination of Officer Timothy Brenton in our neighborhood on Halloween.   The community and the Council have been deeply shaken by this tragedy.  We want to extend our deepest sympathy to his family on their loss due to this senseless act.  Our close working relationship with the officers of the East Precinct makes us feel as though we have lost a member of our immediate community.

Many people in this neighborhood have worked long and hard for many years to turn around what was once a neighborhood with serious problems to one we can be proud of: a neighborhood with a school that has overcome academic difficulties, with parks that feel safe and welcoming to young families and with a greater community that seems cohesive and caring.  We thank the Seattle Police Department and its officers for not only their day-to-day service and protection of our community, but the special outreach they have made to Leschi by volunteering at Flo Ware Park events since its restoration.

We know that this attack on the Seattle Police Department has aroused concerns and fears about the state of the community. We feel strongly that it is critical for us to gather and discuss our concerns, doubts and fears openly.  We need to determine what we can do to keep the gains we have made here and continue progressing toward a better Leschi and for the betterment of all our neighboring communities.  We invite all to attend our Community Council meeting on Wednesday, November 4 at the Central Area Senior Center .

Following our previously planned presentation on James Washington, Jr., we will hold an open forum for the community to share concerns and possible actions.

Expect a big turnout
I ran a similar meeting after the Capitol Hill Massacre that drew several hundred.

I'd expect more people than can easily fit in the Senior Center.

Perhaps move the meeting to the Leschi School gym?

RE: Meeting
Jimmy P- All one needed Halloween night to find a police car was a pair of eyes. (Barring that, an internet connection to listen to the scanner.) I drove home Halloween night coming up Yesler from downtown, and turning North on to MLK. I must have seen 3 police cars on 10 minute drive home, and this was hours before the shooting. Inside knowledge was not needed to come upon a police car in the CD on Halloween. Considering it was the anniversary of the Quincy Coleman shooting, I imagine there was quite a police presence all over the CD that night.
