It's hard to hold back the tears if you visit 29th & Yesler right now. The site of the Halloween night murder of Officer Timothy Brenton is seeing a steady stream of officers, troopers, and citizens who are coming by to pay their respects to the fallen officer.
A growing mound of flowers marks the spot where Brenton lost his life in a first-of-its-kind "assassination" of a Seattle police officer. The mobile precinct van is set up across 29th Avenue from there, manned 24/7, with officers standing outside and offering handshakes and hugs to their fellow officers who are stopping by from all over the city and the larger region.
As we learned yesterday, Officer Brenton left behind a wife and two kids, plus a larger family that includes two retired Seattle police officers. SPD officials are in the process of setting up a bank account to accept donations in memory of Officer Brenton, and we'll update this as soon as we get the details of how to contribute to that fund.
So far there's no official update on the search for Brenton's killers. Police are still searching for the suspect vehicle, described as a white or light-blue sedan, possibly a Toyota, and possibly with bullet holes in one side.
Flags in the city will be flying at half-staff until after the funeral, which is still in the process of being scheduled. Additionally, today the city council will begin it's 2pm meeting with a tribute to Officer Brenton, a reflection on his career, and a moment of silence. You can view that meeting live on the Seattle Channel.
Additionally, CDNews member bryan says that a candlelight vigil is planned for 6-7pm tonight.
