As a police commander commented in yesterday's press briefing, when a regular business is hit with tragedy, they can close up for a while as they deal with the loss. Police can't do that. There's still a job they've got to do even after they lose one of their own. Here's what they're out doing today in Seattle's East Precinct:

Hi Scott, I was waiting for the bus this morning when two police cars pulled a u-turn in Yesler and pulled over a red subaru. Three more police cars showed up within a couple of minutes. Did you hear anything about this on the scanner? It seemed like a big response for what could be a traffic stop, so I was curious.

- If the plate comes back registered to someone who has been violent with officers in the past, the response is larger. Add to that the location, and the current fear that police could be attacked again, and anyone with a history of violence against police is going to get a huge response. Just a theory as to why what you saw occurred in relation to a simple traffic stop.

We've noticed a big increase in traffic stops and vehicle shakes on the scanner. It's not clear if this is an actual increase, or just that there's more officers calling in their actions to report their positions to dispatch. But you can expect that routine operations will have a larger backup now due to safety concerns.

They were actually black males. I hope they didn't relay the message wrong. Guess there would be no hope of finding the guys if that's the case
