Officer shot at 29th & Yesler

I just arrived at the scene. The neighborhood is flooded with cops
from around the city. They're canvassing the neighborhood for the
suspect vehicle.

No word on the condition of the victim officer involved.

Traffic is shut down on yesler east of MLK, and is being diverted
periodically on other arterials too as the search proceeds.

Original Report:
Developing - Shooting at 20th 29th & Yesler - involving a gray Toyota last seen westbound on Yesler. Shots possibly fired into a vehicle

  • 10:15pm - Guardian 1 responding (king county helicopter)
  • Preliminary indication that a female officer has been shot.
  • Shellcasings found in the roadway
  • "Officer down at 29th & Yesler"
  • The scanner traffic of the incident is awful, absolutely heartbreaking
  • 29th & Spring - Bullet holes found in a residence (blocks away from original scene, unclear what the tie is apparently from shots fired by officer)
  • Updated suspect vehicle description is a gray or white Toyota Hatchback
Homicide Detective?
Just passing by the intersection on the #8, I saw a detective putting on a vest that said "Seattle Homicide." I'm sure we'll find out more from Scott and others on scene. I hope it's not an indication of the victim's condition.

Seattle Times: Dispatch traffic indicates one dead
From the Seattle Times:

. . .Details of the shooting were not available, however dispatch traffic indicated that at least one person was dead and that police were searching for a vehicle with gunshot damage.

A supervisor at police dispatch said he did not know the condition of the officer. Dozens of officers were fanning out from the scene looking for the suspect vehicle, which was described as a white or grey Toyota.

Small item of info in case it is ever helpful
I heard gunshots about 10:00 from my home near 24th and E. Pike. At the time I hoped they were fireworks, which is quite frequent here - whichever it was, it was a volley of maybe seven rapid cracks. I suppose they may have been the shots apparently fired at 29th and Spring, before the 29th and Yesler part of the episode, per Scott's report above.

You pay them to stand against these evil criminals who will stop at nothing to get what they want and bring violence onto others. Terrible. Anytime an officer is killed I.L.D. it's gut-wrenching. Condolences to her family and friends. The whole C.D. and the 23rd & Yesler in particular need A LOT more Police presence. I moved from the 29th & Dearborn area earlier this year after 2 robbery attempts at my house, 100's of drug deals from a nearby house, and nightly car prowlers. Don't get me wrong, I love the area, but it needs some serious cleaning up.

That said, good ridence to the vermin that troll the streets around the terrible tragedy. All I can hope for is to read that they perish in the same tragic way this heroic officer did. RE: Yes, thanks Scott
Unfortunately, police officers are killed in all sorts of places, and fairly frequently. I grew up in a quaint little town in Iowa, and one of our officers was shot and killed while patrolling a railroad siding by a grain elevator. My dad had gone to school with him, so we knew the family fairly well. I don't think they ever really recovered from the loss. Strangely enough, I don't think they ever found the killer.

Police work is some of the most difficult work there is - they not only put their lives on the line, they also deal with the most ugly parts of human nature each and every day, and that can affect them in many ways. Sadly, we don't pay much attention until something like this happens, or some kind of abuse bubbles to the surface.

Why isn't anyone asking where the gun came from and why this happened? If guns were not so readily available this kind of tragedy would not happen.
Comment by susan smith
November 01, 2009
RE: guns
Susan, the reason no one (except you) is asking where the gun came from is because their concern is where it should be - with the fallen officer and his family, as well as SPD as a whole. You, on the other hand, are selfishly concerned with promoting your anti-gun agenda. The murderer who perpetrated this act most likely didn't obtain the firearm legally and would have gotten one anyway. And while you're banning guns, Susan, why don't you ban alcohol because of drunk drivers and matches because of forest fires. Please.

This tragedy happened because someone was trying to bump up their rep at the life and expense of a dedicated police veteran. The killing of a police officer in the line of duty should be an automatic death penalty case. I only hope the person who assassinated this officer finds justice.
Comment by karl popov
November 01, 2009
RE: guns
karl popov, unfortunately we live in a society that values the right to possess a firearm more than human life. Why shouldn't Susan ask where this murderer got his gun? Perhaps he got it from an unlicensed dealer at a gun show. Perhaps he bought it from a friend without a background check. Maybe he stole it from his neighbor's house. The sad fact is that it is easy for anyone in this country to get a gun. Our laws are designed to punish those who commit crimes with guns. We have no effective measures to prevent stop criminals from getting guns in the first place.

Even well trained, well armed officers with bullet proof vests are no match for a lunatic with a gun. Guns are different than alcohol and matches. Guns are designed to do only one thing - kill. They have absolutely no other value to our society. So the more guns we have the more deaths will result whether they be homicides, suicides or accidents. Now you will probably reply by saying that guns don't kill people, people kill people. Well more often than not people do kill people - using guns.

I'm so tired of watching the NRA protecting the ability of people to kill each other with ease. We should make it as difficult as possible for people to do harm to one another. We have an arms race in this country and the bad guys are winning because they will always be willing to shoot first. So we have two choices - force everyone to carry a gun and then shoot it out with the bad guys in the streets or disarm. It's time to lay your weapons down.

There will ALWAYS be guns, take them away from sale legally and only illegal guns will be out there; there will be plenty.

I lived with the terror in my heart every day...but going out and acting like these people do, does not resolve the issue, it will just result in more officers and good people falling victim to them. The ways we have tried to "fix" these problems do not work... becoming like they are will not work... we need to make our communities more family friendly and take care of our children so they do not grow up and think behaviour like this is acceptable.

Peace
This state actually trains and commissions "Peace Officers" ... not police officers. Something to think about. I know this because I am one, and have been for a while now. I'm a "veteran officer" like the murdered officer we speak about. The raw emotion of wanting vengeance is one I understand, believe me, I've been there too many times. Truly solving this problem is only going to happen if we understand why it happened. I pray that my brother is at peace, and to honor his memory I will continue to be "an instrument of peace" in this country. Yes, I have the capacity for extreme violence if need be ... I have used it to protect in the past and will not hesitate to use it again if the situation warrants, but I will not dishonor my brother by lashing out recklessly in the very manner he chose to protect us from.

The key, ladies and gentlemen, is to be a good role model. Model the behavior you want the youth to engage in. Be kind, gentle and caring to one another. Be a leader in your community and don't be afraid to stand for what's right. In this dark hour, add your light to the faithful and HONOR this fallen brother of mine so that we may have this be the last time I wear a band across my badge.

Rest in peace.

The following from "This must stop" is a true classic line -- one of the most ludicrous I've seen (ever)

papadon- you should read the comments in the seattletimes.com sometime in response to a report of a crime - any crime - they're very predictable and usually go something like this:

headline: "Teens Arrested for Shoplifting Gum"
comments: "THEY MADE THEIR CHOICE! TIME TO CLEAR THE STREETS OF THESE PUNKS! WE NEED TO BRING BACK PUBLIC FLOGGINGS!"

headline: "Grandma Cited for Jaywalking"
comments: "SHE NEEDS TO LEARN SHE IS *NOT* ABOVE THE LAW! LOCK HER UP AND THROW AWAY THE KEY! IT'S TIME WE START CLEANING UP THIS TOWN! CRIME IS OUT OF CONTROL!"

It only follows when a truly serious crime occurs, such as this one, a real tragedy, that they would work themselves up to imagining all sorts of machiavelien torments and tortures to inflict on the guilty. They're some real sickos; people like 'This Must Stop' are consumed by a dangerous level of penis envy that is a ticking time bomb. Folks like him are probably as big a threat to public safety as the occasional street hooligan. As a card-carrying member of the 2nd Amendment Foundation I seriously hope (I noticed he made a pro-firearms statement in one of his rants) people don't think that vocal gang of 3 is typical of the overwhelming majority of responsible firearms owners.

if you think i'm "beating my chest" then it's you who's the one with the armchair smugness. it's easy to sit there and smugly call people out for their opinions, it's called trolling and you're doing a great job at it. nobody said anything about how "right you are," Zan-o. you're reaching, and it's adorable. it's what trolls do when they don't have a real argument.

you didn't address the real issues that i raised in my post, which, again, points out how you have no real argument.

OH, and just to throw one final nail out there for the coffin of your argument: "Also unlike 2007, crime did not decline throughout the city last year."; "The concerning trend seen in 2008, however, was the outbreak of violence by and against young people. Early in the year, a young man was murdered at a private party..." (that's from the SPD website. you decided to go ahead and use "crime" and "violent crime" statistics from a couple years ago interchangeably. wow, how wrong you turned out to be...if you only did one quick google search you wouldn't have been made to look so foolish.)

again, a call for neighborhood residents to look out for one another shouldn't be met with smarmy, condescending comments.

ouch.

Truce ... please?
Rather than letting things get to the point where contributors here simply continue to attack one another, I'd like to propose a truce. Can we please have some mutually respectful dialogue as we remember what happened last night?

You're both angry ... so am I and most of us here. Instead of taking it out on each other, why not do something ... anything ... to make things better. Having lived in several foreign countries in my younger days while working for Uncle Sam, I feel qualified to say that we enjoy the priviledge of living in a great nation with freedoms that have been won through difficult struggles.

Try to set the hostility aside for a while and see if the anger you're feeling can be the catalyst for something ultimately good. I don't have the answer, but I do know that even the toughest gang can be defeated by a group of citizens who have decided to work together to improve the quality of life in their neighborhood. Disagree, but get along ... in the end we really only have each other.

And yes ... Brit is a hero as far as I'm concerned.

Who knows what that means but one can only assume the reference is to civil forfeiture, which should be avoided at all costs in a just and libertine society and must be stopped and curtailed in the United States. The right of every person to own property is severely derogated by civil forfeiture. It is an affront to freedom of lawful trade and commercial intercourse.

How is it, in Seattle, that people cannot even discipline themselves to join with dignity in a moment of mature regret and respectful sadness over a hideous summary execution?

How is it that comments aren't of the "What can we do about this? How can we be helpful/supportive? Where are the needs the keenest, and how can I contribute in our neighborhood?"

How is it that instead, in this, the nation's supposedly most literate and reading and book-loving city, people immediately start sounding reckless, cruel, immature, mean, and indifference, digressing from the moment we face, intellectualizing and analysing and striking out and grinding their personal woodcutting tools?

And for the record, all of this talk about gangs is nothing more than assumptions. At this point there has been no correlation between gangs and this particular crime. When the police say they are classifying this as a gang related crime then bring the forum dogs out. Until then please keep them in your lovely manicured yards.

agreed.
i'm done with the back and forth, it is just pot and kettle at this point. however, i did start out by suggesting that the community should DO something, that's not worthy of scorn. i stand by my comment.

that's true, there's no gang connection, yet. it does seem like a gang stunt, though. supposedly, there were two people in the car, that doesn't sound like a random guy who just lost it and decided to take out some cops. two people mean it probably was thought out to some extent. all i said in my earliest posts was that if this crime IS gang related they need to punish the ciminals to the fullest extent of the law, (in WA that doesn't mean KILL, for those of you who like to assume things) and they need to find out how to get to the gang as well. that's just common sense. i suggested honoring this fallen officer by doing something proactive that would help prevent something like this. why i was called out for it, i have no idea.

again, my thoughts and prayers go out to this officers' family.

I think, before that, you said things were totally out of control and the world was about to explode. At which point me and others pointed out that, while this occurrence is a tragedy, the Chicken Little routine is pretty offensive as well.

We need heartfelt condolences, not the resident lunatic running in, breaking wind and screaming like a madman. That was my only issue with you, sweet ass.

Thanks honey,

one last time.
"I think, before that, you said things were totally out of control and the world was about to explode."

-prove that. the most outragous thing i said was "find the criminals and punish them." i then went on to say "a community watch (something to HELP the community) should be mandatory." that might sound a bit strong, but all it is is a call to actually do something productive. you are still attacking me for that. your conduct on this forum is inexcusable. saying "we need heartfelt condolences" doesn't excuse your behavior, you are not in the right.

"the Chicken Little routine is pretty offensive as well."

-again, you're making what i said and making it sound MUCH worse than it is. ironic, since you're the one claiming i'm doing the "chicken little routine."

"We need heartfelt condolences, not the resident lunatic running in, breaking wind and screaming like a madman. That was my only issue with you, sweet ass.

Thanks honey,"

-again, your childish tactics only show how little you really have to say. you've said the same, or similar, things about me almost every post, nevermind the fact that i've proven everything you've said about me to be either 1. false, or 2. exagerated to make you sound...smart? (don't know what you were going for.) please stop using this forum to attack people. i can't believe the admin hasn't blocked you yet, or that nobody else has called you out. maybe i should take a cue from the rest of the people on here and just pay you no mind.

yeah. good idea.

RE: one last time.
Sweetie, I'm not attacking anyone, just the resident trolls like you.

You and your assorted other userids under which you're posting have noted:

Seattle has let itself get overrun with this SCUM.

diagnosis: Chicken Little syndrome ('the sky is falling!')

time to take out the trash.

diagnosis: Lion of the Internet syndrome ('hasta la vista, bey-be')

neighborhood watches should be MANDATORY for ALL NEIGHBORHOODS.

municipal conscription into a surveillance apparatus? hmmmm ... that would be ...

diagnosis: Lunatic of the Internet syndrome ('woogedy woogedy wooo!')

TAKE BACK THIS CITY.

diagnosis: Chicken Little syndrome

let these wastes of carbon find out first hand

diagnosis: Lion of the Internet syndrome

that the people of Seattle are not going to take it anymore

diagnosis: Chicken Little syndrome

Find these people and kill them. Public execution is the only way.

diagnosis: Lunatic of the Internet syndrome

Shoot a cop: you die. No self defense claim, no insanity claim, just death.

diagnosis: Lion of the Internet syndrome

I've had it. It's time the tables turn.

diagnosis: Chicken Little syndrome

time for a SERIOUS crackdown

diagnosis: Chicken Little syndrome

cut and paste, much?
ZAN-NO,

this is the last time i'll post to prove you wrong and to clear the air.

my original post said this:

"if they're involved in a gang, FIND THE GANG MEMBERS AND DO THE SAME. Seattle has let itself get overrun with this SCUM. time to take out the trash. neighborhood watches should be MANDATORY for ALL NEIGHBORHOODS. TAKE BACK THIS CITY. let these wastes of carbon find out first hand that the people of Seattle are not going to take it anymore."
-in context it makes perfect sense, even if it is a little strongly worded. broken up into nice little fragments it STILL doesn't sound as bad as you like to try to paint it. a neighborhood watch is a GOOD thing, if you're against it, don't bother joining. it's for the good of the community, but you're making it sound like i'm saying we should all buy in to big brother watching over our shoulder. (again, who REALLY is the "sky is falling" person here? hint: it's not me.) also, i go back to another of my statements, that if you think there are not too many gangs that have been left to just kind of do their thing in Seattle, remember that next time you pass by a tagged building. (it won't be too long before that happens)

you have no right to call me a troll. YOU are the one attacking ME. YOU are the troll. and THIS whole thing is done after i make this last point.

I will say this again: I NEVER SAID ANYTHING ABOUT KILLING ANYONE. I just want the people of Seattle to take a stand against crime and you attacked me for it. i said neighborhood watches should be mandatory and you treated me like i was suggesting roaming the streets in packs with... read more

oh, before i go...
if you TRUELY believe that i've been posting under several different userids, you can go ahead and write to the admin to check on that. they can see who writes in through ppo's. (and please, no comments about "not worth my time, sweetie." just know that i have nothing to hide and you can check my truthfulness) i guarantee that i've used ONLY this id the entire time. you seem pretty familiar with that trick, though.

*to all other posters on this site, my apologies for all of the unwanted unpleasantness. please know i'm not an angry person who like to troll for fights online, i was merely defending myself from one. again, my apologies.

I really don't have that level of interest to engage an obviously angry, and clearly rather off-kilter, troll any further. Please carry-on with your shenanigans elsewhere.
