Your Afternoon Walk Keeps Kids Safe

Your eyes and feet are wanted on our neighborhood streets each weekday afternoon between 2:30 and 5pm.

A new program called "Safe School Zones" is encouraging residents to get out and walk to help keep kids safe when school lets out. Focusing on eight public and private schools around the Central District (mapped at left), the goal is to keep a positive adult presence on the streets and encourage a walkable community.

The Seattle Neighborhood Group also has a list of general pedestrian safety tips:

  • Encourage them to be alert while walking – donʼt let your mp3 player or cell phone distract you from what is going on around you.
  • Walk in groups when possible.
  • Walk assertively, acknowledging the people whom you pass along the way.
  • Carry your valuables safely and donʼt display items of value.
  • Stay on paths that are well lit where you can easily see and be seen.
  • Pay attention to the uncomfortable feelings that often warns us of potential danger. Donʼt be afraid to cross the street, return to a business or ask for help based on that “funny feeling,” – you may be right. “Trust Your Gut.”

See the attached flyer for full details, as well as tips for what to do if you can't get out and walk.

RE: Crossing guards
Every school has crossing guards. Stop looking for slights where there are none.

crossing guards
There are crossing guards at MLK and Yesler, and in front of Leschi Elementary, not sure about the other schools...

Walk by Garfield
I took a walk by Garfield after school recently - saw good and fun behavior from the students and a strong police presence. I hope it keeps up. But each year several students get robbed on their way home or waiting for the bus, always by other young people. So (as a parent of a student who walks home) I hope that many of us will be out and about as the article requests and make "a positive adult presence."

We Need Help in the Morning at Washington Middle School
As the designated crossing guard I am appalled at the lack of safety I encounter while crossing students and adults between 7:25-8:05. I have so many speeding, not stopping at the crosswalk, not paying attention as well as generally not respecting the fact that students are crossing to get to school. Everyday there are near misses and it is really quiet disconcerting. I have called the Seattle Traffic Unit as well as documented license numbers...so far no response.
It could be as simple as parent/community members holding signs stating, "slow down, these are your children".
