Homeless group sets up camp in front of Conlin's house, will be back Saturday night

Councilmember Richard Conlin's home looks out on a homeless camp tonight. A group of more than 40 homeless people and advocates rolled out sleeping bags in the parking strips and along this Madrona sidewalk in a camp-out to protest the City Council president's role in denying their group funding.

Seattle Housing and Resource Effort is protesting the City of Seattle's decision to not provide the group $50,000 so it can purchase bus vouchers, which it says the people who use its services need to get between SHARE's 15 shelters and three tent cities to services downtown. Spokesperson Beatrice Friberg said the group plans to spend Friday night in front of Conlin's home and will return again on Saturday.

"It's a matter of deep belief," Friberg said. "We will not rest until we have the vouchers."

A camper settles in for a wet night

After camping on the parking strip by Mayor Greg Nickels' house Monday night, the homeless activist group slept in front of City Councilman Tim Burgess' house for three nights.

The city is giving the group $310,000 to operate the shelters and has offered a $50,000 advance for the bus vouchers. However, the advance was contingent on the group guaranteeing to keep its shelters open for the rest of the year. Facing a deficit, SHARE says it can't guarantee that. At the same time, it has run out of money for vouchers partially because of Metro's recent fare increases.

Friday night's camp set-up was quiet and went without incident. The group organized and handed out gear at the nearby Madrona Playground before marching in a mostly orderly fashion down 34th Ave to set up in front of Conlin's $800,000 home. "Stay on the sidewalk," an organizer yelled. The campers laid out their gear in a line stretching from the corner of Cherry and 34th Ave and down or three blocks past the councilmember's home. In front, an 'Elect Richard Conlin' sign was joined by sleeping bags and large sheets of plastic to keep the rain away. The infamous portable toilet on the back of the group's pick-up was parked on the street in front. Conlin's house remained dark and it appeared that nobody was home, his garbage can still sitting on the curb.

A SHARE member talks with police

Two police cruisers stopped by to check in. The officers stayed in their vehicles and talked to a few of the group's members. After a few minutes, they pulled away. "It's getting a little routine," one of the campers laughed.

Frieberg didn't say where the group would move to next after another night in Madrona on Saturday but she did vow that the group will keep up its camp-outs until the money for the vouchers is provided. She also said the group won't target the homes of any of the mayoral or council candidates. "We do not have an issue with the candidates," Friberg said. "They have done nothing to us and some have been very supportive. Our concern is with the mayor and the council."

Meanwhile, the neighbors of councilmember Conlin stayed inside for the most part on a drizzly Friday night. One ducked out long enough to say hello to the men camped in front of his home. And to thank them for guarding his truck tonight.

end funding
SHARE needs to get all their funding cut at this point, they are now a low energy terrorist group.
also don't forget they house sex offenders (near schools) but refuse to do background checks, they have been busted for this already even though the sheriffs department is wiling to do the checks for free.
I was a supporter of the tent cities........Until now.

RE: end funding
THANK YOU. I'm really sick of the bleeding-hearts glorifying these people as if they were the 2nd coming of Les Miserables.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK. See how SHARE is REALLY spending their money. See how their practices REALLY turn out, and maybe you'll shut your mouth before you pipe off with the stereotypical "oh well then would YOU take them in" rant. In the meantime, I'll be renewing my concealed weapons permit.

Stay Strong
Without transportation, how can the ever-increasing homeless in shelters (including women and children) get to vital human services for medical care, food, counseling, etc.? I support SHARE's efforts. I would rather the money taken from our paychecks in the form of taxes go to bus tickets for the homeless than to pay city government's inflated salaries. A 10% cut in each of their salaries would go a long way toward making a difference in human services for the most vulnerable population (not to mention schools, public services, etc.). How much money does a person really need--that second and third car, that $800,000 house, that Rolex, that second or third 42" TV is someone else's food, shelter, medical care--or bus fare to those services. Compassion and humanity for the poor is born from visible struggle and protest.

RE: Stay Strong
They already take our money in the form of taxes, taxes we pay in return for services. This year King County took $4000 from me in the form of taxes. I did not get a bus pass/voucher in return. Fact of the matter is for the money I was charged I got nothing. Yes 10% cut in salary would be helpful. How about 20% across the board as we are all well aware county and city employees are overpaid. as per what is the problem? well blocking city sidewalk is illegal ( obstructing the public right of way ) lets start there and make sure the Police enforce this. Welcome to Seattle.

RE: Stay Strong
@synodone, the truth is that you get a lot for your $4000 (i.e. the running of the county and all the public services this entails, police, fire, gardbage pickup, etc. etc.) to say you get "nothing" for your taxes is totally inaccurate. if this is the way you feel, you should move to the woods, create all your own roads and live off the land!

RE: Stay Strong
Sheesh what a drama queen, "Stay Strong". And a wildly inaccurate drama queen at that. WE are not "well aware county and city employees are overpaid." You THINK that, and that's YOUR problem (jealousy of municipal employees).

RE: Stay Strong
Just to make it clear, Conlin only owns 1 car, a 19" regular tv (no plasma), rides his bike or takes the bus to work every day, bought his house for $87,000 and voted against any type of salary increase for the councilmembers every time the issue has been raised for the last 12 years he has been in office.

I don't really care if these people want to sleep in front of politicians' houses, but really, where do they think it is going to get them? The city already gives SHARE 60% of the bus tickets the city is issued...that's a lot! I was told by an inside source that SHARE told the homeless people that usually stay in their shelters that if they did not participate in the protest/demonstration, they would not be allowed to stay in their shelters any more. That is messed up!

I want a free bus pass
Who's lawn do I have to sleep on to get it, I am unemployed, so I must be eligible for something now? The thing I ponder most however is that if these bums don't have fare now - how are they getting to all these different homes to terrorize 'peacefully' without funding right now? This is ridiculous.

They somehow managed to all get rides in cars and vans to the houses. Maybe they should have used those free rides to do something more useful...

I live a block away
and I didn't hear or see a thing, which means that the whole thing must have been pretty quiet and peaceful.

I think it's fair to agree or disagree both with the group itself and with this action, but I think we take all meaning out of "terrorism" if we start applying it to things like this.

SHARE
suddenly this tread sounds like an episode of glenn beck - demonizing the protesters as "bums" and those of us caring about constitution rights as "bleeding hearts", and moaning about taxes. well boo hoo, move elsewhere if you feel so overwhelmed by taxes. again, disagree with SHARE's cause and their method of protest all you want, bottom line is they have a protected right to do this. they were quiet, peaceful, clean, and left early. and they didn't block the sidewalk or a driveway, either - a technicality they smartly avoided (or were smartly advised by their counsel). so i say again, what's the big deal? knowing richard personally, i'm sure if you walked up to his house, knocked on the door, and spoke with him for a few minutes about this, he would say the same thing - a short-term, moderate inconvenience to him and his family. not a big deal. so how about this: stop slinging arrows from the comfort of your computer chair, walk your ass to his house this evening, and see for yourself.

Couple of Comments
The reality is that we are in times like the Great Depression, so get ready to live with the fact that a lot people do not have homes, denial won't change it. Share also has probably the most cost effective shelter program in the city, so if they say they might be at risk of closing then something is really wrong with the allocation of funding.

Minor point. I doubt that Conlin spent $800K when he moved in, likely at a time when many more people could afford to buy houses. I am not sure when he bought, but Madrona was included in the redlining all the way down to the lake. I know people who had to pull together cash to buy, no mortgages available. And the amount was not out of reach.

RE: Couple of Comments
umm. Other than, unlike during the Great Depression, if you lose your job, you will have unemployment payments for awhile, and then foods stamps and Medicaid -- oh yeah all of that is goin down the tubes and they stopped counting people unemployed past collecting unemployment so teh true unemployment rate in this state is estimated to be at least 16% -- and the fact that it has all been a slow, long time process of economic attrition for people who are not wealthy, and this state tends to lag the nation in economic ups and downs do the recovery is going to be later...guess things like homeless encampments are just some fluke.

What a bunch of crap!!!
First off, anybody that thinks that Richard Conlin bought his house for $800K is a complete idiot! If you look at the information on his house on Zillow, his house was purchased in 1983 for $95,000. Also, whoever made the statement that his house is an $800K in the first place is also incredibly stupid or is a liar. Also on Zillow, you will wee that the house is currently appraised for $627,500.

I don't care if this protest was peaceful or not! To camp in front of somebody's home is just plain selfish! Why should a whole neighborhood suffer because of a SINGLE person? It is unethical, selfish, and incredibly pointless! What is funny is that it sounds like he wasn't even there so the neighborhood had to endure this pathetic excuse of a protest and the guy who was targeted didn't see a thing. What a joke! Also, I've heard from a VERY reliable source that SHARE was forcing homeless people to do this protest or they would not let them stay at their facilities. SHARE is an organization full of rats and liars!

I had the opportunity to be in the Madrona neighborhood to witness this pathetic protest in person on Friday where two of the homeless protesters demanded I bring them coffee. Why do they deserve my coffee or anybody else's? I work very hard and pay for my coffee so why shouldn't they? What right do they have to demand anything from me or from any of the other residents of Madrona?

I feel sorry for the people with the wool pulled over their eyes as this disgusting act is just another scam by a dishonest organization to steal money from the government. The city already gives... read more
