Mugging @ 25th & Dearborn

This is a cross-posting from the CNA Chat (Colman Neighborhood Assn.) email list. I’m just copying and pasting — I’m not the writer. Thought it was important to spread the word.

“Hey all, on top of the gang/shooting news I just found out my roommate was mugged tonight on his way home a little before 7pm on 25th Ave between Dearborn & Charles. He called the police soon after but other than taking a statement there wasn’t much else they could do.

“5 African Americans between 17-20 age started swinging punches and kicked him to the ground. They made off with his backpack, camera, phone and wallet. He’s doing ok but is shaken up and trying to get his business in order.

“If anyone living around there saw or heard anything please let me know. Also he’s having a hard time with documentation and I’m assuming that the perps probably threw his wallet somewhere. If anyone finds a wallet with cards and ID with the name “Timothy” please let me know, as he’d really appreciate them back.”

Further useful comments on the thread:

1. “On the topic of crime: I’ve noticed a significant drop in the number of police driving by on a daily basis. It used to be that I would see 2 or 3 each day and for the past couple of months, I’ve seen maybe 2 or 3 a week. Given the recent shootings and break-ins I would think there would be an increased police presence, not the case unfortunately.”

2. “I have attended a number of BlockWatch type meetings over the years and have heard repeatedly from our police that neighborhood calls correlate directly to the amount of police support we receive. If you see anything suspicious (even if it’s just the usual drug activity), I have been advised to call and voice our concerns.

  1. “5 African Americans” … wow! Five on one… what a bunch of brave macho tough guys.

  2. I’ve heard that a good technique to discourage muggers (usually youth who are bored rather than hardened criminals) is to make signs with as much information about the crime as possible and post them around the neighborhood. This action serves two purposes in scaring off the muggers from repeat crime AND notifying neighbors, especially those without access to the Internet, of the crime. I’d really encourage the survivor to do this, for himself and the rest of us.

  3. And I’ve heard that a good way to discourage muggers is to take a weapons safety & shooter training course, get a concealed carry permit (available to just about anyone), buy a handgun, and be prepared to use it. As much as we’d like to think so, the police are primarily in reactive mode. They very rarely will PREVENT a crime against persons from happening, especially with the sparse street presence and absurd Officer per Captia ratio we have in Seattle.

I know this upsets a lot of progressives, but only you can protect yourself when it comes down to it.

  4. Or, you can learn self-defense. That way, you can learn to defend yourself against one or more attackers so that you can get away and so that you can’t accidentally have your weapon turned on you.

  5. or if 5 people try to mug you, you can shoot them all dead. Please make sure they are dead though, we do not want our court systems and jails filled because of sloppy work.

  6. Come on, HL and darren. Is that all you got? Fighting jerks with jerky behavior?
I think we’re smarter than a bunch of punk kids, don’t you?

The problem with being progressives (imho) isn’t that we refuse to carry weapons when we walk around the neighborhood — it’s that we’re too independent, and too busy, to organize (that old “herding cats” thing). I’m with Rebecca: organized action will take care of the problem. There are many, many more good citizens than thugs in the CD. A community leader would go a long way toward organizing us to deal with the problem.

And call me a sucker, but I don’t want these kids dead. I want them to grow up to be good neighbors and good citizens.

  7. You are a sucker. I want them dead. People who do this kind of thing can’t be rehabilitated and should be removed from the planet.

  8. I don’t know who’s scarier, out of control teens, or those of you who are so angry you’d suggest (and maybe even practice) vigilantism that ends in murder. Need a war? Become a mercenary – lots of jobs in the Middle East.

  9. This will be my last post on the subject: advocating gunning down teenagers, or anyone, for that matter, is worse than irresponsible,
