The Jacob Lawrence and James W. Washington Jr. exhibition (paintings, sculptures, artifacts) is also fascinating. The guide to the exhibition is very well written, and well worth reading before you look at the paintings: puts everything in a historic context. I was at first puzzled why some of the paintings/sculptures in the guide were not on display, then realized (I'm a bit slow) that the Lawrence/Washington exhibition runs till Feb 18, 2009, but that the works on display will be changed after August 18, 2008. They are keeping some of the stunning works (eg Lawrence's Jomo Kenyatta head and some of his bird sculptures) till the 2nd show, so I'll have to go back and pay (or go on the 1st Thursday.
